Heatley is awesome, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn'y "build a franchise around him" He is a great 2nd guy, but not THE guy. I kinda compare him to Sundin...not in how they play, but rather, neither one is the man to be building a franchise with....maybe the best "2nd" guy in the league, but not a #1.

they don't have to trade kane or towes because they are signed at a low contract and hossa is a free agent so it gives them a year before they have to worry about that.but as some one said they have soo many big contracts now that i can't see away for them to sign both towes and kane.also no one has mentioned that kris versteeg still is not signed and he was a really good 2nd line winger for them.
i did not read the article but off the top of my head the players they will need to sign by the end of next year looks like this
kane
towes
brouwer
cory craford (back up to huet)
kris versteeg
i'm pretty sure they have more as well
they could drop huet if carwford looks good at back up.that would open up 5 mil for kane or towes but if you think you're going to get either one at 2.5 mil your fucking nuts.

as for healty i would be surprised if he is not a sen next year.he's a very good player but the money and the way he is acting right now i would not sign him now.not sure of a team that is willing to give 8 mil a year for a guy that has droped in point perdution over that last two years.

nice thread by the way i'am surpised at how long it's kept going maybe would can get a name change on the thread to hockey talk or something?

A name change would be nice. It's times like this I wish I was a mod. I do admin on a couple of other sites so I really don't need the extra 'work', though.

As for Chicago it's interesting to note that they gave Hossa what he wanted but will likely lose other players next year. This will be a wait and see situation to discover whether this was worth it or not.

Detroit basically signed Franzen instead of Hossa. I like the fact that The Red Wings will pretty much be back to the team they had when they last won the Cup. Albeit with some added youth such as Leino, who they just signed (2 years @ $800k per year) and Helm who will be a starter as well. It looks like Abdelkader will remain in the lower league but could see more playing time as he's on the cusp of making their roster. So injuries will determine when and if he plays.

Chicago is definatley loading up for their run at the cup next season. Although I still think they need a goaltender, Huet ain't leading anybody to a Stanley cup, unless he buys them all tickets to the Hockey Hall of Fame. But after that when Toews and Kane are up for their new contract, Chicago will either A/ look like Tampa a few years ago with all their money in 3 players or B/ completely ripped apart and look like Chicago of most of the past decade.

Ottawa just signed Kovalev for 2 years 10 mill. That leads me to believe Heatley won't be back....where he goes, who knows but Ottawa can't afford both Heatley and Kovalev.

Pronger just signed an extension with Philly. I guess that makes the trade not as one sided as it could have been. P.S. They still need a goalie...BAD!

well chicago just signed versteeg for 3.9 mil a year for 3 years.
they are going to have to let go kane towes or huet next year i can't see kane or towes signing a home town deal both player are 5 mil pluse a year imho and if they let go of huet then what are they going to do for next year they won't have money to sign a good number 1 keeper.

hudler just sign with the dynmo of the khl so the wings lose another 2/3 line forward.the funny thing is i'm still not worried about them.that goes to show you just how deep of a team they have.

Agreed about Hudler. I'm happy for him.

I do want to say that my favorite captain of all time is obviously Steve Yzerman. That said, I do think the next guy that comes to mind as a great captain is Joe Sakic. He's retiring due to back problems and he's just a stellar player and person. I'll raise a beer to him this weekend before I watch UFC 100.

Here's a great article about the now emotional Avs legend:

Yes, Joe Sakic was 100% class!!! A GREAT hockey player, a great captain, a great ambasador for the sport, and a great person who gave back to the communities in which he lived and played!
In my era of watching and following hockey, take away Gretzky, and Mario, and Joe Sakic ranks right up there with the elite, the very best since 1980.

Joe Sakic, Stevie Y, Bryan Trottier, Peter Stasny, Mark Messier.

Thanks for all the great Canadian hockey moment you help provide!!

Here's to Joe......

rep'd. Even being a Vancouver fan and watching him smoke the canucks game after game I love the guy as a hockey player. He was the epitome of what it means to be an hockey player. I'm kind of dissapointed he retired because I would love to see him captain team Canada to a gold in his home town. That would be one of the all time great hockey moments. His retirement almost marks the end of an era. There a few players left like Lidstrom and Brindamour from his era which is one of the best ever. War for ever Joe Sakic.

Sakic was an awesome player. Very respectable guy, on and off the ice. The sport could use a lot more guys like him. He is a great role model.

On another note, Koivu is gone from the Canadiens to the Ducks. He has been there for quite a while. I wonder who they have in mind to step into the captain's role. They need a franchise player desperately. I'd love to see Lecavalier on the team.

I've heard Daniel Briere's name being mentioned if they can't get Vinny.
