Marbury Calls Dogfighting a Sport
Quote:
NEW YORK (AP) - New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury defended Michael Vick, calling dogfighting a sport and comparing it to hunting.
Marbury spoke Monday about the federal dogfighting conspiracy charges against Vick while promoting his basketball shoe in Albany, N.Y.
"I think it's tough," Marbury said, according to Albany TV station Capital News 9. "I think, you know, we don't say anything about people who shoot deer or shoot other animals. You know, from what I hear, dogfighting is a sport. It's just behind closed doors."
On Monday, Vick said through a lawyer that he will plead guilty to a federal charge of conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiracy to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture. He also faces possible prosecution in Virginia.
"I think it's tough that we build Michael Vick up and then we break him down," Marbury said. "I think he's one of the superb athletes, and he's a good human being. I just think that he fell into a bad situation."

Wow. I am just completely astonished that people actually have the gonads to say things like that without really thinking about the context of their message towards topics of this kind.
This is just idiotic, I really don't know what else to say about it. Even if it were true, as he is comparing it as such in a completely simplistic form, there's really no reason for him to risk making a comment like that considering it has nothing to do with him, and the fact that it is a sensitive topic. He said something really dumb and now he's going to look like a total fool when it would have been ok for him to say nothing.

I will say this, I am not a fan of Marbury but I saw the comments he made on Sportscenter and the way he put it was like he didn't know alot about it but from what he's heard it a sport. Unfortunately it is considered a sport in some parts of the world (I don't agree with that). What you need to understand though is that Marbury didn't come flying to Vick's side on this. He was walking out of a building being asked questions by reporters. They brought it up not him, he just gave his thoughts on the situation.

First of all let me say that I'm 100% opposed to animal fighting of any kind, and Vick deserves what he gets.
I do think this is a little more complicated issue than it seems. When a guy like Marbury, Dieon Sanders, or Chris Samuels make their remarks about dogfighting, I think they are just not informed. They probably come from a culture where it is acceptable and they may not be aware of the public perception of dogfighting and how awful it is. Also when the shit started to hit the fan Vick didn't seem worried at all, like he didn't think he did anything wrong. What I'm saying is that I believe that we need to raise the level of awareness in our society. I have never heard of anybody else famous, or not getting in trouble for animal fighting. There is a place about 75 miles from me where dog/chicken fighting is a known thing - yet nobody seems to care. Anybody who does this shit should be punished, I just hate to see people go to jail or ruin their lives over something they honestly don't know is wrong. The obvious question is "how do they not know killing/drowning dogs is wrong", I don't know the answer to that, but we do need to raise awareness, and make sure people know how awful it is. I think that is the first step to stopping this stuff because it is barbaric.

Marbury says a lot of dumb shit pretty frequently (Stephen A. Smith rips him a new one every so often). I just see it as him being him.

Marbury Update
Quote:
NEW YORK -- It didn't take long for New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury to go from defending Michael Vick to distancing himself from the soon-to-be-imprisoned Atlanta Falcons quarterback.
After being criticized for his remarks Monday for calling dogfighting a sport and comparing it to hunting, Marbury told the New York Post for Thursday's editions that he despises dogfighting and that Vick "is 100 percent wrong."
"I don't like it at all," Marbury said of dogfighting. "I don't think [Vick's] right. But this dude is trying to ask for forgiveness. ... The way the way it's going about in the newspapers and TV, it's ridiculous."
Marbury also said he never called dogfighting a sport.
"I said, 'From what I hear, dogfighting was a sport.' They're editing me on TV," he said.
On Monday, Vick said through a lawyer that he will plead guilty to a federal charge of conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiracy to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture. He will be sentenced Aug. 27 in Richmond and also faces possible prosecution on state charges.
Speaking hours after Vick announced he would agree to plead guilty, Marbury -- while promoting his basketball shoe in Albany, N.Y. -- told reporters he was in Vick's corner.
"I think it's tough," Marbury said, according to Albany TV station Capital News 9. "I think, you know, we don't say anything about people who shoot deer or shoot other animals. You know, from what I hear, dogfighting is a sport. It's just behind closed doors.
"I think it's tough that we build Michael Vick up and then we break him down. I think he's one of the superb athletes, and he's a good human being. I just think that he fell into a bad situation."
