Anderson Silva vs. Brandon Vera... seriously, think about it!
*My rep sucks but I think this thread should be moved out of the Noob pile, common admin*
I was watching UFC Unleashed last night, high out of my mind (which is when I come up with my best ideas). They featured several of Brandon Vera's fights.
The first thing I realized was how quickly Brandon Vera has become a legitimate heavyweight contender. His debut against Scherner was in October of 2005, if you subtract the layoff due to management issues, you understand he really hasn't been around for that long. However, if you look at his opponents carefully, I think most would agree he is in fact a legitimate toip heavyweight in the UFC and thus the planet.
- Assuario Silva - I almost feel bad for this dude, he's fought descent against both Tim Silvia and Cheick Kongo, and held his own against Vera until getting caught in a submission. He's probably one of the best UFC fighters to never get a win. All I'm saying is beating him is still a quality win, and showed Vera's intelligence and all roundedness. Watch the fight again and see how Vera uses Silva's anger about an eye poke to force him into becoming overaggresive, and the way Vera capitalises.
- Justin Eilers - Wicked KO, enough said.
- Frank Mir - This win is complicated. Many will argue Mir was still not back to 100% for this fight. It's tough to say whether or not he was. It's tough to say whether or not he even is now. I was impressed with his win over Lesnar, but Lesnar, despite his obvious raw talent and long term potential, is still unproven. For the sake of arguement though, imagine this win occured WITH Mir actually being 100% for this fight. The first thing Rogan says is how much Mir's stand up looked to have improved. About 2 seconds later he was rocked and not long after the fight was over. Basically, consider the toughness the Lesnar fight showed in Mir and then consider how dangerous that makes Vera look in this win.
- Tim Silvia - I don't hate anyone in this world, let alone someone I don't know personally. That being said,I really dislike Tim Silvia. In fact, I'm a hatter, pure and simple. I do respect the dude though. Even though a ton of his fights end up boring and the fans end up booing, you can't argue the fact that he is a perrenial contender and two time CHAMPION. Even if you love to hate him, or think he's boring, like I do, he is still a tough match-up. Vera went the full three rounds with him, never really took much damage, and had a severely broken hand. This fight to me is just proff the Vera is an elite fighter. I think he clearly lost this fight and can't use the hand as an excuse (nor has he), but can still come out of this fight knowing he belongs.
So all that analysis to say Vera is good. Very good. What has this got to do with Anderson Silva? Alot, in my opinion.
WEIGHT
Vera is a small heavyweight, one that could easily make 205. Anderson is a big middleweight, one that I beleive could compete, though probably not dominate, at 205. If you really think about it, a catch weight of anywhere between 195-205 would not be that unrealistic.
STYLE
This is what got me excited. The Eilers knockout had me thinking about how Vera is a pretty good striker. Maybe not as crisp as Anderson, but he would bring alot of power coming down from heavyweight. Also, both guys have a stellar ground game to back up their Plan A of knocking you out. I would guess the fight would probably be a stand-up battle but the potential for it to be a die hard sexy display of all facets of MMA is there. You thinking about this yet?
CAREER
This fight probably wouldn't happen just yet. Anderson is thinking about boxing right now, and probably will end up fighting Okami in the near future. Vera still has his mind set on the heavyweight title and could be inches away if he beats Verdum. However, if Silva is still looking for a marquee matchup 6months to a year from now, this fight would be completely win-win for both fighters. By that I mean a win would supplant either fighters legacy while a loss would do little to set either back very far.
Anyways, I got really excited about the idea of this fight. The truth is it'll probably never happen. You can't deny the power of a bunch of message boards demanding a fight though, can you?

This fight has about as much chance of happening as Gina vs Fedor.
I think Vera takes it though.

Vera would KO Anderson. It would be a great match up though. Something along the lines of Griffen vs Bonnar.
