Early GSP vs New GSP
I'm not talking so much who would win in a fight. But more so your opinion as to either when you liked him more, when he was more exciting, or whatever.
The period of time I have in mind is Georges before his knockout loss to Serra (Pre UFC69), or since then (Post 69).
I've been a fan ever since his fight with Karo, but my enthusiasm has waned since his knock out loss. Not because of the upset, but because of how the upset seems to have changed his fight game.
Pre 69, Georges was intense and had furious gnp. He would get you down and was content to stay in your guard. Forgive me for making the comparison, but like Tito used to do. In a way he was like Tito Ortiz but with great striking. (Compare GSP vs Sherk to Ortiz vs Shamrock for example)
Post 69 GSP seems to me a bit tentative, more of a technician he uses gnp to pass your guard. When I watch these fights, I feel like screaming "ELBOW!". Am I crazy? or do you guys see a change too?

Though I dislike GSP, I think the present GSP is a lot stronger and better than GSP of old.
Both physically and mentally.
If you remember, pre-UFC 79 there was an incident, and he has never been known as a strong mental competitor, and people were starting to doubt if he could win the fight because of his weak mental game. However he still dominated Hughes in that fight.
So imo the GSP of present times is physically, skill wise and mentally stronger than he was before his loss to Matt Serra at UFC 69.

So you're telling me the GSP isn't better now after judo throwing Hughes ass, making him say uncle, and then not only avenge the loss to Serra but he kinda proved it was a fluke.
You're crazy, despite that KO loss GSP is stronger than ever right now and I would even rank him number 1 p4p over Silva, but you can't really do that cause Anderson is on a better streak. But I think that as far as technique and being well rounded GSP is better #1.

Funny you mention this because in my opinion, fighters have become too content in staying in guard and raining down blows.
IMO, GnP should be used to set up passes...I'm the complete opposite as I find myself yelling at the TV when a fighter is sitting in a loose/open guard yelling "Pass the f*cking guard"!!

I'm talking about GSP here, not your run of the mill fighter. He is the exception because he used to land blows very effectively from guard.

New GSP v. Old GSP
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that GSP wins.

You're right...I'm not arguing the fact that he has a very effective ground n pound...I'm just a firm believer in improving your position.
When he fights Penn again he's going to have no choice but to sit in guard (if he takes him down) and throw elbows because he won't be able to pass!!!

gsp is better now then ever. he realizes his biggest strengh is his wrestling bjj and gnp. he no longer trys to stand and trade, tho his standup is very good as well.
his takedown defense has also improved a lot. hughs was able to take him down in the first fight. now hughs would not have any chance of taking him down imo.
so over-all, his bjj has improved, his wrestling is better, he uses his biggest strengh now in fights, hes mentally tougher. hes over-all better.
