I agree with you, and I was about to create this thread.
I've discussed this recently with another kind MMA enthusiast, I do feel like BJ would beat Silva. Especially now that BJ has rededicated (or perhaps just dedicated) himself to being the best fighter of all time.
Maybe you can call me one of the BJ Penn nut huggers, I just think that BJ has a chin of steel, highly above average striking, one of the sickest ground games ever (come on man no-one else has dexterity in the lower body like he does) and a killer instinct. I want to comment on his heart and cardio, but it may be too early to tell how much he has improved in that area.

I respect BJ Penn and his amazing ability, but I have to say the biggest thing everyone is ignoring here is the fact that Anderson Silva would have an 8 inch reach advantage over Penn. Think about that for a few moments, that means in order for Penn to get inside to take Silva down he is going to have to eat 4-5 punches and constantly be eating them the whole fight. I know he fought Machida and went the distance with him, but Machida is no Anderson Silva and lacks his KO power and his precise striking. IMO Penn would just get picked about by Anderson Silva and probably wouldn't even make it out of the first round. Do you guys remember that ummm Serra dropped Penn? Who do you think hits harder and is a better striker Serra or Silva?

Getting dropped by Serra only means Serra has power... it doesn't mean he is a better striker then Penn.
I think you are ignoring the fact that everyone who has been KO'd by SIlva decided to engage with him... Lutter is barely a striker or a wrestler and he took Silva down several times while avoiding damage everytime...
Besides, Penn is a much harder target to hit then Nate, Rich, or Hendo... all three of those guys will take punches to deliver their own... you rarely ever see any fighter even land a solid shot on Penn.

Interesting match up!! I would def love to see that!! It would be a block buster fight!!! Silva has the advantage in the striking but when it comes to BJJ penn has the upper hand. Although Bj's stand up is pretty good. I hope to see it in the near future!

I think you are forgetting the 8 INCH REACH ADVANTA?GE, everyone is actually ignoring. No matter how hard it is to hit Penn, he is going to get hit if he wants to bring this fight to the ground. He will have to get inside and go to the clinch, which means he will get hit and often. And who really wants to clinch with Silva? After what he did to Hendo one of the best clinch fighters ever. Yea, sorry Penn is going to eat knees in the clinch and would get KTFO.

Why do people think that because Anderson Silva knocks a lot of people out that it means he hits hard? do we honestly think that the only method to knocking people out is having heavy hands? please tell me thats not the case.

Penn is really really really really good at slipping punches...
and really really really good at using his hands to set up his takedowns
i think he would be able to get silva to the ground with little damage and sub him...
just because silva is taller and has a good MT clinch doesn't mean that penn is for sure going to get knocked out...
he's not just going to run in with his hands down and stick his chin out and then shoot....he's smarter than that.
