Full house at Australasia qualifiers

Australia, the land of surf, last Sunday saw a different type of wave: a wave of people watching the every move of Jiu-Jitsu fighters competing for a spot at the Professional Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, to take place from April 30 to May 2, in Abu Dhabi.

A crowd of around 1,500 people packed the Sydney University gymnasium to see for themselves the bouts between the 200 athletes from Australia and New Zealand to sign up. Organizing the event promoted by Carlao Santos were Paulo Guimaraes and Alexandre Prates. Overseeing the competition was Fernando Paradeda.

“All first-place winners will receive a plane ticket, board, food and a visa to compete at the Professional Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, in Abu Dhabi, UAE. They will be bracket leaders, and not participate in the preliminaries at the championship. This was the first of six qualifiers to take place around the world, where the best athletes will be selected to fight at the Professional World Championship,” Paradeda explained.

“The event was a success. We received and excellent and diverse crowd. Not to mention the high level of the athletes to compete. I’d like to congratulate the organizers Alexandre Prates and Paulo Guimaraes, along with their directors Bernardo Treko, John Shimuca and Goiano,” the organizer concluded.
