My First BJJ Class.
We I went to my first BJJ class today. I was planning on going just to watch the class and check the place out. But once I met everyone and Billy (brown belt) asked me if I wanted to do the class today I couldn't really turn it down. They gave me a GI top and i just wore my athletic shorts for bottoms. There were only 3 other people in the class besides me, one guy was about 5'11 and 320lbs.lol the other was about 6'2' and 230 or more, then there was a guy that was about my size he was about 5'9 and 175 and then a girl that was about 5'6 and 130 or so, then Billy the teacher who was about 5'10 about 185 or so......
We started off warming up...Joggin around the mat a few times then shuffling around the mat, then doing lunges (I hurt) all the way around the mat. We then paired off and did some drills. I paired off with the guy that was about my size and a white belt. I'm not sure how long he had been training. We went over some moves standing up. then we did some moves from the back and guard.
Everything went pretty well, but we were doing an Arm Bar drill where you pull guard and move back and forth to one arm to the other you would go arm bar on one side then pull guard again and arm bar in the other side.....Only problem was when I was throwing my leg over and turning my hips I did kick him in the head a few times,, nothing big and nothing that would really hurt him but I felt like a dumb ass and kept saying Sorry....Sorry.....Sorry. But he was cool and very nice and everyone went out of there way to show me anything I had questions about.
After we got finished drilling Billy asked me If I wanted to stick around for a bit of free rolling...SO I Said "sure".
So he set the timer for 5 mins
So I pair off with the whitebelt that was about my size and started to roll. I pulled guard right off and went for a Gogoplata, Man I had it, I was able to get my foot over his head with his arm still in , but as soon an I started to pull his head down he got his harm out and sat up.
What should I have done??, I felt so close.
Then I was able to sweep and get back into a neutral position where we were both on our knees. He shot in and I sprawled and had his head between my legs. At this point I went for a Kimora on the right side. I was working hard for it but couldn't quit get it from that position. THis whole time he his grabbing my Gi at the bottom and is trying to push be to my back. I had the Kimora in deep but not deep enough to get the tap. So I tucked my head on the right side and was able to roll him where I was in a position where I was on top but still couldn't finish the Kimora, he was albe to sweep me where I was on my bad but still had the Kimora, I pulled half guard but still couldn't finish it. I finally let it go and was gassed pretty bad. Anyway...(I have to get in the shower, my GF is bitching at me) He ended up getting mount and I gave my back thinking that I could sneak out the back door. I almost did but right when I thought I was out he grabbed my Gi around my neck and was able to get me to tap. I was so fucking gassed. We talked about 1 min. Then I went and puked.lol I drinked some Liquor last night and that probably didn't help much.. Over all a good experince and besides getting my ass kicked it was pretty fun. I just wish I wasn't so damn out of shape, but I guess that's what I'm getting into if for huh?
I'll post more later when I get a chance. Any advise from you guys?
Next class is on Wensday and I'll actually join the gym then, today he just let me roll with the guys and train a bit just to see if it was somthing that I would like and of course I did.
Thanks for listen to me ramble.lol

Advice I received from other people here, and has been good in my class... If you get caught in a submission ask how to defend it. If you can't sink in the submission, when done ask what you could of done, or what to look for to better sik it in or improve your position.
I forget all the people who told me that stuff, but it was good advice.

my best advice to you.. you should have gave up the kimura.. you spent so much energy trying to pull off a move that you weren't that close to having and it caused you to gas. You could have switched to an Americana as a bait (causing him to resist and then just turned it into a kimura).
The ground is much more about balance and strategy.. not necessarily power and such.
Keep having fun man. I am loving the school I am at now.. learning a lot.

I swear to God I would have got the Kimora if we weren't wearing the Gi.
It amazed me today at how much of a factor a Gi can be. With holding it and actaully useing it it makes the game a whole lot differant.
I have some light background in rolling but never with a gi and never at an actual school. It was fun and I learn somthing new.

lol I rolled with the 5'11" 320 pounder and it was brutal. At one point he was on top and literally smothering me and after about 10 seconds of that I had to tap bc I could not breath. lol I think I rolled with the same guy that you did. The guy who was about your size. If it is the same guy then that's funny bc I kinda mauled him. It really wasn't fair bc I just keep overpowering him. That's my biggest problem is I keep just trying to power my way out of things and I gas way sooner then I should.
P.S. I am going to make you my bitch Friday Sundance.

Should I bring a Video Camera?
We can post it here.
Or maybe we should actaully get into shape first so we don't gas in 2 mins.lol
How big are you?

I don't know exactly your position from what you are saying about the Kimura but if you got the hold but you cant torque it enough do an akido Roll with your lead arm and your opponent usually wont make it out (this is dangerous though you can hurt them) the other thing you can do if you are on top in side control on his back and he is holding his hand underneath (which you should do mind you) to keep you from pulling off the kimura. Cross you arms like you do when you are mad still holding the Kimura and pull back with your body weight and it will torque his shoulder.
