I don't know what is worse Tim Sylvia charging $40 for an autographed picture or the guy who was actually thinking about getting his autograph and paying for it.

Damn, we aint had a Tim's a douche thread since he lost that belt. The good news is since he isn't the champ anymore the last time I was at Applebees and he came in they didn't make me give him my table.

In the bodybuilding world the douche charging the fans is Lou Ferrigno (The Hulk). What these guys don't understand in the fans decide their fate.
If the fans don't like you, or you don't put on a good fight you will be on the undercard. No exposure, limited contracts, less money per fight.
They need to pay the fans back for supporting them. We pay $40 to see these guys fight every month (more if you go to the shows). We are the ones paying their UFC contracts.
A little love goes along way.
Fock Sylvia.

hahahaa, nice
on a realated note: GSP has an autograph session a few weeks ago in a city close by to me, so a buddy and I decided to make the trek, it was supposed to be a signing form 11am-4pm, when we got there at 1130, there was a huge line outside the bar where the signing was talking place, and it was $30 just to get in, then apparently a meet and greet, then a Q&A period, i say apparently because we sure as hell didn't stick around
i prolly would have paid the $30 bucks if I was guaranteed an autograph, and waited in the line, but there was the same "pre-pay" deal that all these douchebags and their parents had already got tickets for, so we left without our autographs
i don't think it would have been that bad of a deal if you were able to be there the whole day, but the Raptors started the playoffs that afternoon and didn't want to miss it (hindsight is 20/20)

I know Emmit Smith charges for his autographs, and although I’m a die hard Cowboys fan (please no trash throwing from the stands), I have lost respect for Emmit for adding to his millions by charging children for his signature. I’ve always thought that Dana White actually required many of HIS fighters to participate in fan related social events to boost UFC popularity. I do think $40 is expensive, and for me, I will not pay for anyone’s autograph except Muhammad Ali.
Edit: spelling (as usual)

That's crazy, I met him at a fight when he had a booth. He signed everything, gave me a cocky smile, I grabbed the stuff, said thanks and started to walk away. He was like, "Hey, that's $10". I tried to joke with him and said, "For this, are you serious" I hoped to get a little laugh out of him but he just gave me a shit look. I should've wiped my ass with it, all athletes need to realize that no matter who they are, they wouldn't be shit without their fans, or should I say ex-fans. Later I went over to Matt Hughes stand and he did autographs, and pictures all for free and he even was laughing and joking around with everyone all night. Now that is how a professional athlete needs to treat their fans...

I am going to go out on a limb here and say something that will most likely get me flamed. Im not defending it, just pointing something out.
I agree that it sucks to have the NFL and MLB players (or any famous sports figures) charging a kid that will cherish the autograph and whatever it is on.
At some point in time however, signatures became worth money along with baseballs, cards, jerseys, and anything else you can put a signature on. I for one remember going to a hotel to get Barry Sanders (the great) to sign a football card for us. Yeah, I was probably between 16 and 18 years old. Mine was to keep, because I was a fan, but my friends that went with me promptly sold theirs for a bunch of cash.
I feel that it is largely because of this culture that people feel they can charge for their signature. If someone is going to turn around and resell their signature, why not?
It is a shame that is happening, and it sucks for the fan. I guess it does act as a good barometer of your stardom/popularity. I met Tim and Matt Hughes in Vegas. They both signed autographs for my brother and myself (Tim was actually really cool, but Matt was a dick) and did not charge us a thing. I would not pay any money for either of their signatures, but I would have gladly paid to meet and greet with GSP. To me, that one sounds like an expo that was charging, and not GSP.
Im not saying its right (and yes, Tim and AA BOTH owe us for Sylvia-AA 3), all Im saying is there is another side to everything. How many Montana signatures do you think are actually in peoples houses versus how many are for sale in card shops or mall kiosks and up on Ebay?
To my point, there is what looks like a polaroid of Joe Montana walking down the street that he signed being sold for $350 on Ebay.

It's pretty typical for an athelete or any celebrity to charge for an autograph. Especially at a convention that isin't related to whatever they work for (NFL, UFC, MLB or so on.) I'm from San Francisco and 've known for pretty much my whole life that Joe Montana charges $300+ for his autographs. What sucks is that it's never advertized that you'll have to pay for the autographs. When he would do appearances at local malls and such it would just say "Joe Montana will be signin autographs from such and such ..." bring your cards and autograph books and what have you. $40 is pretty cheap but I probably wouldn't even ask Silvia for an autograph if I saw him o the street. Not worth the time.
It's a double sided sword with the chargin for autographs though. They charge because they know some people are going to try to sell the autographs and people don't want ot pay for the autograph because it's just someone's writing.
