Serra, Hughes to Coach TUF 6



Matt Serra (Pictures) and Matt Hughes (Pictures) will coach 16 welterweights during the sixth season of SpikeTV's The Ultimate Fighter, UFC president Dana White announced during the international broadcast of UFC 70 from Manchester, England on Saturday.

Serra captured the UFC welterweight title two weeks ago today by stunning Montreal's Georges St. Pierre (Pictures) with a first-round technical knockout, the first of the Long Islander's eight-year mixed martial arts career. "The Terror" earned his title shot by defeating Chris Lytle (Pictures) in the finals of TUF 4, a season in which Hughes appeared as a guest coach and sparked up a rivalry with Serra.

Hughes was the division's dominant champion before losing his belt to B.J. Penn (Pictures) in January of 2004. The Illinois born-and-bred fighter rebounded to win six in a row, including a title-reclaiming submission over St. Pierre in Oct. '04 after Penn walked away from the belt. Hughes lost the title to St. Pierre in their rematch last Nov.

Though a fight between Serra and Hughes was not announced, it has been TUF tradition for coaches in the same weight division to battle in the Octagon at the conclusion of the show.

I think this will be interesting. Should be alot of fireworks, I hope they get great fighters.

It'll be a polarizing season for sure. Lot of Matt haters out there, lot of Matt fans. Matt turned a lot of people off after coaching TUF 2.

So this is the reason they are not fighting until 75-76. I think it is a awesome idea.

Good Q, I assume PPV. Ken and Tito fought on PPV after their season, so the precedent is there for it to not always be at the season finale.

Your probably right, but it would be kick ass to have a title fight on Free TV>

I'd bet heavily on it being a PPV fight, even if they are giving up Penn Pulver for the TUF 5 Finale. This could mean a pretty long wait for Serra's first defense though.

That's the one thing that had me scratching my head. Matt Hughes is surely first in line to challenge him, isn't he?! Are they truly going to wait that long for Serra's first defense?

I would assume that the show would start airing in August sometime, and end in late October, I hope we don't have to wait that long for the Hughes/Serra fight, but I can see them fighing before the finals of the show.
