The Ultimate Fighter 2’s Jorge Gurgel (10-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) will face Jamie Varner (12-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at UFC 73 in July. Gurgel told a UFCjunkie.com source about the upcoming match during a Warrior Mixed Martial Arts event in Bowling Green, Ky., last night.
UFC 73 takes place on July 7 will air on pay-per-view. The event is expected to take place in Las Vegas and also features two title fights. UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva will face Nate Marquardt, and lightweight champion Sean Sherk will face Hermes Franca in his first-ever title defense.
Gurgel, a training of former middleweight champion Rich Franklin’s, most recently defeated The Ultimate Fighter 3’s Danny Abbadi at UFC 63 in September. Three months prior to that undercard fight, he lost an entertaining fight to Mark Hominick via unanimous decision in the televised portion of UFC Fight Night 5.
Varner, too, is coming off a victory in the UFC. “The Worm” defeated local Jason Gilliam on the undercard of last month’s UFC 68 event in Columbus, Ohio. The fight — the first of the night — ended with a quick 94-second submission via rear-naked choke.
Prior to that fight, Varner lost a tough-fought UFC 62 match to Hermes Franca. Varner was winning the fight and on his way to a decision victory but was eventually submitted by armbar in the closing minutes of the third round.
Considering the UFC’s stacked 170-pound division, the Gurgel-Varner fight could very well take place at 155 pounds.
The full rumored card for the event includes:
UFC 73 (July 7, 2007) — Las Vegas, Nev.
Champion Anderson Silva vs. Nathan Marquardt (for UFC middleweight title)
Champion Sean Sherk vs. Hermes Franca (for UFC lightweight title)
Tito Ortiz vs. Rashad Evans
Jorge Gurgel vs. Jamie Varner

Varner will dominate, Gurgel is a good teacher, crappy fighter
I see 3 pretty good fights in a row, not a bad card.

I agree, although I would like to see him win one, but I don't think there is anyway this guy can compete with the elite of the weight class. Mach, Gomi, Sherk, Melendez, Diaz, and most of the contestants on TUF 5 would beat him.

I don't know why people are dissing on Gurgel so much, shit he fought with a complete ACL tear in his knee, and that was like a day or a couple before the fight. That shit would hurt! Also Hominick wanted nothing to do with him during there fight, and got the win because of two leg sweeps, while running away from every other attack.
This match will be sweet.

2 leg sweeps? He picked him apart on the feet the entire fight. I agree he ran but Hominick dominated the fight and controlled the action, kept it standing because that was where he wanted it.
