Default Question: How good was Bas Rutten?
I'm not an expert and while I'm not quite new I'm obviously not as knowledgeable as some of you here. I saw a highlight reel of El Guapo but I don't really have a reference of how good he was back in the day. I only really know him as a PRIDE color man/personality who was a great fighter at one time (oh and his awesome Lethal DVD).

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

He was a very good fighter in his day. A lot of people consider him one of the best heavyweight fighters of all time. There is a Bas Rutten vs. Fedor thread floating around somewhere in the Dream Matches section and Bas has a LOT of votes as the favorite to win. He was a very well rounded fighter. Maybe the most well rounded of his time. He had DEVASTATING strikes and a really good ground game, not to mention fantastic heart and cardio. He has a pretty impressive record with some huge wins. p4p one of the best fighters of all time. Makes my top 10 easily for best of all time. I love watching his old Pancrase highlights.

I don't think there's been a fighter with the kind of lazer-precision striking as Bas. His opponents never seemed to know where they were going to be hit next and that IMO is what made Bas so great.

Judging from the comments he makes during commentating as well as his defense video, he comes across as a very intelligent fighter, a thinking man's fighter.
