Georges St. Pierre and Matt Serra: Drinking Buddies?

Posted by UFC Junkie on April 7, 2007 at 12:20 pm ET
With the bad blood between Diego Sanchez and Josh Koscheck stealing most of this week’s UFC 69 headlines, the main event of UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre vs. Matt Serra has been one of the least-discussed headliners in recent UFC history.
Of course, the lack of publicity probably results from the fact that Serra, who won the title shot by winning the welterweight division of The Ultimate Fighter 4, is considered a overwhelming underdog in the fight. Oddsmakers are giving him little more than a 10 percent change of taking St. Pierre’s belt.
And when you factor in the two fighters’ soft-spoken and respectful demeanors, their pre-fight hype looks like a birthday candle compared to Sanchez and Koscheck’s fireworks.
And as Andy Cotterill reported in his Sherdog.com column today, St. Pierre and Serra are on the road to a warm friendship.
From Sherdog.com:
I asked Georges about a rumor that he and Serra went out together and had a few drinks.
A huge grin broke across the champ’s face and he started to laugh.
“Yeah, me and Matt Serra, after the filming of Inside the UFC, the TV show with Joe Rogan, we went out together and we had a great time.
“We were saying to each other, ‘Let’s smoke the peace pipe one more time before the war.’ After that night we shook hands and we said ‘good luck’ to each other.
“He’s a great guy and I really like him, but it’s just business. You know, unfortunately I have to fight a guy that I like.
“He’s not my friend, because I would never fight a friend, but he’s a very good acquaintance and I look forward to becoming friends with him after the fight.”

Just a quick note regarding yesterday’s UFC 69 weigh-ins in which Sanchez shoved Koscheck.
A UFCjunkie.com source down in Houston and close to the situation is telling me that UFC officials have already discussed the possibility that Sanchez will be fined and suspended for initiating contact on the stage.
Any punishment would obviously be enforced after tonight’s fight, but it could be far more serious than the slap on the wrist he received for his failed drug test at UFC Fight Night 8. Sanchez received a $500 fine and a three-month suspension for testing positive for marijuana in the post-fight test back in December.
With no punches thrown and the confrontation anything but unexpected, any possible punishment for Sanchez seems rather ridiculous.
After all, the UFC gave the video prime placement on UFC.com today. Could they really be that bent out of shape?

Unlike most im actually more excited for this fight then the diego/koscheck fight. Serra is a guy I always like to watch and GSP is one of the most exciting fighters ever. I dont need the fighters to hate each other to get pumped for a fight. Good read thanks

There's a couple of classy, exciting fighters right there. I hope that GSP and Diego are both the winners tonight and then we can see GSP vs. Diego sometime in the near future (after GSP vs. Hughes?). I'd like to see Diego try shoving GSP like he did Kos. GSP will teach him a lesson.

I think Diego either if he wins tonight still wont get a match against Hughes or St Pierre next.

once he beats Kos there's no one esle at WW for him to fight, he beat everyone else. The winner of the Hughes/St. Pierre Rematch will get Diego next
