Agreed. Old UFC used to be more this way, Royce Gracie/Oleg Taktarov etc. getting beat to a pulp until they wore guys out and subbed them. I think the way the fights are run now, is a pretty good balance of entertainment without cutting the ground game out. It is pretty lame though when a good ground game is briken up just because its slow.

Nope.

Yeah striking will always be the eye candy in MMA. I love a good grappling match, and solid rolling but too often it seems like when 2 elite ground experts end up on the ground it is a stalemate. There are exceptions of course (Diego v Karo, Big Nog v Werdum), but common fans don't appreciate the positioning and reversals.

The grappling game will never surpass the excitment of a potential K.O. You'll never see a highlight show of the best grappling performance, but you'll always see "Top 10 KO's". Staying off topic I think that the Sylvia/Couture match was great as far as grappling goes. I kinda wish that Mcarthy would have let them stay on the ground longer. It seemed that he wanted to just leave it go in the first round when Tim was on top and it kind of stalled, but later when Randy had control and was actually working some g'n'p Big John would stand them up.

Default Ground game

Actually I think groundfighting can be entertaining.

After all, Pride rules promote the ground game, and Pride is pretty entertaining. Instead of standing up people who stall on the ground (a rule which actually promotes stalling), Pride punishes people on the ground who actively stall and repositions fighters so that they are not neutralized by the border of the fighting arena.

I'd guess most fans are new to the sport and have never rolled with somebody on the ground. Obviously the ground game doesn't excite them too much. To the untrained eyes, it's just dry humping.

I also bought UFC 1 and 2 and I'd have to watch it again but I believe Royce got booed and Shamrock got booed. Why? Because they won their fights on the ground.

This is very true, but, in point of fact, Royce's strategy in those early fights was just that: to stall until his opponent made a mistake. It took Dan Severn some 16 minutes before Royce triangled him, and Shamrock in the Superfight pretty much just laid in Royce's gaurd for 36 minutes.

Agreed; baseball is a good analogy.

The home run is king in baseball; it always has been and always will. There are segments of fans that appreciate good baserunning strategy, pitching duels or great pitching, a well-conceived and executed gameplan, any number of other things; but unique above all those things, a home run speaks for itself, has no nuance and needs no interpretation. Likewise the KO. It speaks for itself.

It's gonna take a lot of time for mainstream fans to appreciate the ground game. My ladys friend and her BF came over. They both watch UFC stuff and in the Franklin/MacDonald fight they kep saying it should be stood up. This was as Franklin was dominating him on the ground, punching the shit out of him and even looked to be setting up an armbar.
