Matt Hughes Victimized by Poor Game Plan, Lack of Angels
I'm sure this will fan some flames, but that's not why I posted it. The full article is actually a good read an interesting interview.
Full article:
http://www.ufc.com/index.cfm?fa=news.detail&gid=4581
I’m not a religious guy, though I have no problem with those that are. Live and let live, I believe.
But after reading the latest UFC.com story written by Thomas Gerbasi, I can’t help poke fun at former UFC welterweight champ Matt Hughes’ logic for why he lost belt to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 65.
From UFC.com:“I remember being in the staging area, right before I walked out to the Octagon, and I just had so much faith that God was gonna have me win that fight,” said Hughes, a two-time UFC welterweight champion. “It was the same faith I had before I fought B.J. (Penn) and before I fought Frank Trigg the second time. And I think if you watched those two fights, you could say that I had an angel helping me there. I was in bad trouble in both those fights and I ended up victorious.”
Unfortunately, no angels were apparently present when he was battered and bruised in the first round — or when he was ultimately TKO’d in the second.“It was just one of those things that it just wasn’t in God’s plan that I win that fight, and if that’s the way it is, then I can live with that,” said Hughes graciously. “God’s will is by far greater.”
Again, I don’t want to turn this post into a religious debate — though, unfortunately, I know it will — but I was happy to read further into the story and learn why Hughes really though he lost the fight.
Hughes admits that he had a poor game plan — one that played into his weaknesses and St. Pierre’s strengths.
Don’t expect the same mistake this Saturday when Hughes (40-5 MMA, 14-3 UFC) faces The Ultimate Fighter season four welterweight finalist Chris Lytle (22-13-5 MMA, 2-5 UFC) — an MMA veteran who also sports a 16-1 professional boxing record.
From UFC.com:“I just caught up in the dilemma that I’ve got with standup and I shouldn’t have,” he said. “I’m never gonna be a top notch standup striker. My specialty lies on the ground.
“I think one of the only ways [Lytle] can beat me is on my feet, so you’re gonna see me going back to my slams and beating people up on the ground,” said the 33-year old Hughes, who made his name with his otherworldly strength and ground and pound. Sure, he’s added an underrated submission game to his arsenal as well, but when you think of prime Hughes, you think of him planting someone on the mat and pounding them out. That’s a pleasant picture for Hughes fans, and for the former champ himself.
No matter what you say about Hughes’ perceived cockiness or arrogance, there’s simply doubting that he’s one tough son of a bitch and one of the absolute best MMA fighters to ever come out of the UFC. He’s a surefire UFC Hall of Famer and the owner of numerous of the organization’s records.
Hughes enters his fight with Lytle a huge favorite, and should he dominate the fight like most people expect him to, I think fans will really be clamoring for Hughes vs. St. Pierre III — an epic battle that could take place at UFC 72 in June. Throw in the Nate Marquardt vs. Anderson Silva fight UFCjunkie.com first reported, and UFC 72 has all the making of a summer blockbuster.

Like another poster once said on here, it's amusing when a fighter thinks God is helping him beat people up for money.

Don't be surprised at what faith in GOD can do. When you say people wonder why god would help someone beat up someone else for money it comes down to the message Matt says after a victory he always thanks Jesus Christ his personal lord and saviour. Which is a strong message for someone not to hide their christianity too bad more people didn't have his faith

Jesus Christ giving you the power to whoop someone's ass......right......

It irritates me whenever any athlete thanks God for allowing him to be victorious in whatever endeavor he was in. Like God really cares about some insignificant fight in the grand scheme of things. I'm pretty sure He has a lot more important things to worry about than worrying about who's gonna win some fight or game. Gee, I wonder who's side He's gonna be on if Sanchez and Hughes ever fight. If one wins, that means the other is so obviously with the devil, right?

you guys are hilarious.
God obviously cares a great deal about MMA. he's a huge fan. And why not? seriously, look at history. God loves ass kickers.
Also, he's omniscient and omnipotent, which means he can control the outcome of the Hughes/GSP fight while also telling Pat Robertson when the world is going to end, and maintaining the fabric of reality on a subatomic level. God isn't limited in the ways that we are, its beyond our comprehension. but to think that He doesn't care about 'insignificant' things such as sporting events is patently false. unless, of course, Koscheck is involved
