UFC's scoring system
I know Herring lost the fight last night. Im not going to dispute that. His loss brings up a few points.
1) He fell victim to the lay and pray. In Pride they dont score for takedowns unless you do some damage which O'brien didnt. Yeah he landed one good elbow but Herring was never in trouble, even when he gave up his back.
2) Does the UFC need to change their scoring and adopt a card system like that of Pride. We've seen this before. Nick Diaz comes to mind.
Lastly, do you guys think that switching from Pride to UFC hurt Herring? I do, not just the scoring system but also the lack of knees to the head of a downed opponent etc.

I agree - you might have missed the thread I just made here:
LnP
And Afro, Zuffa are easily strong enough to get that rule changed or to move states imo.

Is the round scoring system determined by the Nevada State Athletic Commision? Or another org.?

The problem is more that the scoring is not well defined (in the UFC or Pride really). There's nothing that reall says how takedowns are scored as compared to other techniques. It's all up to the judges opinion.

I actually don't think that the UFC scores takedowns that highly but the problem is when nothing other than takedowns happens for a round. Then you have no choice but to give the round to the guy getting the takedowns as opposed tot he guy getting taken down.
