People with no apreciation for the ground game have no business watching mma. they should stick to boxing if all they want to see is guys get punched in the 150 times a night.

The only reference I can give is mine. I grew up the only white kid in a predominitly Latino area, I got jumped a couple of time(and beat down by a couple of the bigger kids). My cousin was taking Judo, and I started to go down there w/ him. For me it was the only available option(no other schools other the TKD around). For me I guess I was afraid, and felt the need to supplement my school yard tendencies for something more. I think alot of kids probably go through the same wether Boxing, TKD, BJJ depending on what their enviroment and peers present. And striking is more popular throughiut society. Look at Cheese Dick Martial Arts flicks Few have grappling moments most is flying through the air, landing on a pebble and punching hundreds of enemies to rubble However time has definitly shown that both are effective in different situations depending on the amount of oppisition.

A friend of mine who won 2 world karate championships discussed with me what martial art to take. I didn't know what I should take, what's useful what is not. He told me to take Traditional Ju Jitsu. I will never forget the reasoning he gave me was, "If you ever get in a fight, chances of landing a knockout punch are thin. People are always aware of their face, if a fly buzzes around your face you swat it away, well it's the same thing in a fight, chances are your punch will miss or be swatted away."

A guy I work with took kick boxing for 5 years. Thought it was cool, thought he was learning some good shit. His instructor faced off against a ju jitsu guy in a MMA sparring match. The ju jitsu guy submitted the other guy 5 times in 2 minutes and the boxer threw one punch and completely missed. My coworker immediately quit kickboxing after this.

So yeah, big hay maker punches and wild head kicks look cool, but if somebody takes martial arts thinking that's what it's all about their an idiot.

Maybe your coworker instuctor just wasn't very good. I've trained with BJJ fighters and other then thier submissions they were easy to manipulate on the ground, take down, and defend their take downs everytime. I'm not saying wrestling beats BJJ everytime because I don't know BJJ well enough to know if those guys knew thier MA enough to really be good. There is also a big difference between competetive kick boxing and tai boxing.

Mui Tai has clinch, knees and elbows, which I think works out much better for MMA and takedown defense.
