I'm another big fan of grappling whether it be BJJ or wrestling. My preference is always though to see well rounded fighters with lots in their arsenal. But if I had to choose one or the other it would be the ground.
I do agree that it's more the new fans that don't UNDERSTAND the ground game. To the untrained eye watching a slug fest is a lot easier to understand.
Many of us that have been watching MMA for years fell in love with the sport because of Royce's BJJ and later the dominant wrestlers. At that time a pure striker didn't stand a chance.
Also Tokyo, I agree with you about flashyness attracting a lot of ppl. The ego thing has a lot to do with it. Look at some of the ground specialists that have made the mistake of trying to compete standing instead of going with their strengths. Couture, Tito, Hughes, and Babalu pop immediately to mind. I don't know if their behavior though was about themselves or about pleasing this new fan base.

BJJ to the untrained person does not look like much, just glorified wrestling and I think many people want to show off and be flashy, rather then have real self-defense skills. I think a big reason people take up to martial arts is to impress people and what’s more impressive then throwing a kick sky high or smashing boards?, it is an instant demonstration of skill. Instructors looking to sell their art to the uninformed and gullible public need only fly across the room with some jump kick and scream K-A-R-A-T-A-Y!!! most people will look at that and think “bad ass! I want to do that.” BJJ does not really have any eye candy, just real self-defense. What do you people think; do you think some idiots shy away from BJJ because it does not fit the model of looking like an action hero?

You know, I really dont' think people take Martial Arts to impress anybody. Most people do their homework prior to taking a class to see what they are interested in. That's probably the most ignorant thing I've read on these boards in my short time here, and I've read a lot of ignorant comments.

How would you know why people study martial arts. You're just as ignorant as he is.

groundfighting is like anything. People don't truly respect it until they try it.

Taking Martial Arts to impress somebody is retarded. It's just like guys who go to the gym just to tell people how much they can lift. There's a lot more to it than impressing other people.

It just seems odd to be so concerned with why people do what they do. Who cares? Most people are idiots, so they will act and talk like idiots. Why worry about it?

Same reason Racing fans would rather see a crash than a clean pass, They have no idea the technical side of the sport, there just there to see someone get there teeth knocked out.

I'm not denying that it's more interesting to watch two guys go toe to toe throwing bombs and being flashy. But to get into any martial art based on the thinking "I want to look cool by being able to throw punches" is stupid. And yes, the majority of people are idiots. It's really a shame.
