I'm not saying GSP needs to develope a dangerous guard... I'm just saying he doesn't have one.
oh I completely thought the other way. Although it would be great if he did. I'm waiting for the day he throws his legs up for a Triangle choke. I didn't expect Tito to ever do it but desperate times do call for desperate measures.

I know he can get to that point if he focuses his training for it, and I'm sure he will work on his guard if he moves up to MW where there is a good chance he will be on his back a lot more then we have seen him at WW. It's just a matter of getting comfortable there.

I'm sure his guard has gotten better, but I have the feeling he went to Brazil to train passing other people's guards.

GSP fights every 3.5-4 months. Two of those weeks going to taking time off after a fight and 2 months goes to training specifically for a fight. So, that leaves him with a month to a month and a half to improve on certain aspects of his game. I think that's not enough time to improve on a specific component in a specific discipline which might be the reason why he doesn't have the greatest guard.
I know that he loses the size advantage if he moves up to MW but MW has worse wrestlers than WW. I personally can't think of anyone besides Hendo and Okami who could put GSP on his back. Well Maia has yet to face a top wrestler but he will definitely pull guard.
GSP's ability to pass the guard has been pretty good even prior to going to Brazil but I thought he mainly went to learn how to sweep his opponents but that's pure speculation from my part.

You are giving me shit claiming I don't know who Popovitch is and you think that picture of John Smith (the greatest Freestyle Wrestler in US history) is me? Lol... thanks for proving my point little boy.
is that the american wrestler thats famous for gut wrenching??
today in bjj class my instructor gut wrenched the shit out of me when i turtled.
lol he gut wrenched me like 15 times (not picking me up and slamming me but more so rolling me) and i was like wtf is going on lol and i pretty much got so exhausted i just gave up on getting to my knees lol yes sad. then he told me that it was a gut wrench (not sure if its called something else by other people but thats what he called it) and he told me about some famous wrestler (i forgot his name cause im horrible with names) that was known for gut wrenching guys and he beat some undefeated guy in the olympics to win the gold and then retired. and i thought he said his name was john smith but im probably just mumbling on like a retard

Kidding. This post is a parody of the "GSP doesn't have a weak guard" argument of last night.

LOL! I'm a black belt in BJJ and Judo, so if someone with a lower rank beat me then I'd def give up my belts given I shouldn't be beat by a lower rank based on MANY factors...
REALLY? Who gave you your blackbelt in BJJ?
I've seen a number of "brown belts" and "black belts" come into my school to train who got tapped by purple belts because their brown/black belt were not legitimate.
One specific time that comes to mind was about a year ago, we had this guy come in wearing a brown belt. Obviously he attracted a lot of attention because no one knew him, but people noticed the color around his waste.
I've had my blue for 2 yrs, and trust me it is a legitimate blue. I could have probably been close to purple if I had been competing, but school has really put a halt on competition. Back to my point, the color of belts dont mean shit. It's who gave you the belt. I along with a couple of blue and purple belts tapped this dude with the "brown belt" repeatedly. You bet your ass he NEVER wore that brown belt to class again.
To quote Royce, a Blackbelt only covers 2 inches of your ass. YOU have to cover the rest.

He was good with a gut wrench (and yes it's called a gut wrench in wrestling too lol) but was known more for his single leg takedowns more then anything.

Pablo Popovitch. The same guy who trained Bj Penn for his fight against Sean Sherk, amoung other UFC fighters, for their fights? And I think I've won enough tournaments and rolling competitions to be a legit black belt. And just because your school brings in jokes, doesn't mean all of them do.
I have watched all of the gsp fights, i understand he got submitted by hughes, i dont remember the penn fight well enough but from what i remember he wasn't in guard, when he did take kos down it wasn't just merely from kos's leg kicks, i dont even think kos threw that many leg kicks i would have to watch the fight again, but either way he took him down at will kos and hughes were all american wrestlers and gsp took them down at will, penn is not an all american wrestler so he is also going to be taken down at will
and no he didnt take hughes down before the penn fight he knocked his ass out with a head kick
i take back my statement about the olympic team, gsp said himself in an interview that he was going to try out but never did cuz he was going to fight hughes instead....dude no matter what if you can make an olympic wrestling team, you wrestling skills are going to be pretty dominant from most other fighters
if u dont remember the penn fight u must be somewhat new to mma becuase anyone whos been a long time fan knows everything about that fight.
to say gsp will take penn down because he took down hughs/kos and their all american wrestlers is a bad comparison. neither of them have the crazy flexibility and balance that penn does which enables him to stop the takedowns.
