BJ PENN CONDITION UPDATE; The UFC's Doctor's Diagnosis
Posted by BJPenn.com Staff Writer

As the fans all watched BJ enter the cage for round three against Matt Hughes, it was obvious that something happened to BJ. His hands were down, his punches were off and his dominance of Matt simply wasn't there as it was in rounds 1 and 2. Most people thought and speculated that BJ gassed or wasn't physically prepared (as Matt Hughes alleged). As we previously explained, those thoughts simply are not true.

While in Las Vegas for UFC 64, BJ met with the UFC's orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine doctor in Las Vegas for a physical exam and diagnostic MRI study of his ribs and oblique muscles on his right side. The report verified and substantiated exactly what happened to BJ at the end of second round when he thrusted up and around to gain Matt's back. During this upward and twisting movement, BJ pulled/tore internal muscles located inside and around the bottom right rib and fractured the rib. As explained, this type of trauma can and will cause a constriction of his right lung, leading to a substantially diminished breathing capacity.

While BJ congratulates Matt on his victory, he looks forward to the rematch to continue forward with his dominance; as the fans have seen in his victory over Matt at UFC 46 and the first two rounds of UFC 63.

To all of BJ's fans, we appreciate your support and continued interest. BJ will rest and return with a vengeance.

Thank you.
I love it when all you people that hate BJ claim that he wasn't hurt and he's trying to find an excuse why he lost...well here it is...it's offical...he did mess up his ribs like he said...he didn't try to make it sound like he didn't deserve to lose but instead congragulated Hughes on his win...make my words...if GSP doesn't beat him then BJ should get a rematch with Hughes after winning most of the first 2 rounds in their last fight. In no way am i a BJ lover...but i did think he was beating Hughes and if that injury wouldn't have happened then we would be seeing Penn vs. GSP at UFC 65

Well I dont think you can doubt the validity of BJ's claim that much of his lack of form in the 3rd round was because of his injury. However he did state before the fight that he hadn't been training like he did for previous fights and was just going into this fight to do his "thing". Therefore its no wonder that people jump to the assumption that he gassed and looked tired, I dont think u can blame them for that after BJs comments. The other point is that if he had been training like he did for previous fights would the injury have occured, was he as flexible as he has been previously?

As for a return fight on a personal note I'd love to see it but BJ has got to climb himself into a #1 contender spot first by winning some return fights. Hughes also has his plate pretty full for the moment I would say. He's got GSP, followed by the TUF winnder and then im pretty sure it'll be Diego Sanchez after that who's most definately earned his shot.

I think this fight will happen but dont be suprised if its not for 9 months to a years time.

HE still lost, and he'll be back. If everytime it was documented that so and so got injured during the fight, then we'd have a billion threads like this. It's a fight, dont make excuses.

If that was true then he would'nt have gassed against GSP.

Dude, you obviosuly didn;t understand what he meant. Look below and you will see a same post with over 6 pages people discussing. every aspect of this has been discussed. We don't need three threads discussing the same stuff.
Also, you can't watch a short footage of someone's training and conclude that that person doesn't train hard. He came in at 166 and he looked very fit.
Lastly, I dunno if you were the one who said this but, BJ said he doesn't like to train professinally because it burnt him and he had nothing left when it was time to fight. He wanted to train so that he would reach his peak when time to fight. That's how he always trained and thats how he racked up those wins before his recent comeback to UFC. People need to stop taking things he said out of context and make up their own conclusions.

Anyways, look through 6 pages of discussions at below. I think everything about this has been discussed.

I am so tired of arguing this. If you had bothered to check you would find 7 pages of argumentation on this topic. The BJ fans aren't changing their minds and the haters refuse to see what actually happened. I just say we let it die and then when BJ becomes the champ next year we bring the threads back and rub it in the faces of everyone who said he didn't have a chance.
