Arkansas MMA fans receive quite the surprise
The Fort Smith Convention Center in Arkansas signed a promotional contract with a group to put on several mixed martial arts bouts at its venue in June. It appears that convention officials and local MMA fans may have gotten a little more than they bargained for.

According to a new report just published by the Association Press, it looks like someone may have pulled a fast one on the convention center officials.

On June 6, a promotion billing itself as “Blue Collar Brawlin‘” was contracted to put on “cage fighting,” according to the article. A comedy spot was put into the program where someone using the identity of “Straight Dave” would get into an altercation with a planted fan in the stands. The two would then have a staged confrontation in the cage where they would rip each other’s clothes off and share a brief romantic embrace.

Apparently though the two actors went above and beyond the call of duty and as the article states, the two “went right up to the line of the city’s morality laws.” The reports indicate that there was a lot of nudity, kissing, and some heavy petting.

Turns out there were 1,600 fans in attendance in addition to real fighters who were signed to fight on the show. The crowd reportedly became livid and a sea of people began hurling their beers towards the cage. It reportedly took approximately 45 minutes to disperse the angry mob.
After reading the article, it doesn’t appear that people know for sure what happened. However, it’s looking like Sacha Baron Cohen, the man behind HBO’s “Da Ali G” show, as well as the major motion picture “Borat,” was behind the prank.

One of the lesser known characters that Baron Cohen portrays on his show is that of a openly homosexual entertainment reporter named “Bruno.” Baron Cohen has reportedly been all over the place in recent months filming for a feature film in which the “Bruno” character will be starring.

It looks like Arkansas MMA fans will be front and center in the upcoming release, which has a working title of “Untiled Bruno Project,” according to IMDB.com, and is tentatively slated to be released sometime in 2009.

If you were in attendance at this event and have pictures and or video, we’d love it if you could forward copies of what went down to us at: SCaplan8 at comcast dot net.

That's hilarious. I remember when he conned these college wrestlers into doing all of these provacative wrestling moves on each other and then telling them it was for a gay tv show. They got so mad, they broke his mic and he ended up leaving.

that's crazy if it was Sacha Baron Cohen... he was just in the news over the weekend... he managed to get an interview in Jerusalem with an ex-Mossad agent and some Palestinian guy... apparently, they were much better sports about it than these Arkansas MMA fans... I saw a David Cross DVD where he went to Arkansas, and it was crazy how rowdy the crowd was, at a comedy show! I think he might have chosen the wrong people to mess with this time, though...

I'm from Arkansas...I can't be surprised. Not even remotely. Let's just say gays don't get much support around the state.

I read another version of this story that said they had a prepared "escape route tunnel" for the two guys involved, straight from the cage.

That was probably a really good idea...

"Bruno" Pranks It Up - July 8, 2008

Quote:

JULY 8--Lured by $1 beer and the prospect of "hot chicks" and "hardcore fights," thousands of Arkansans were duped last month into appearing as extras in comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's latest staged mayhem. Cohen and his confederates organized cage fighting programs on consecutive days in Texarkana and Fort Smith. Both cards ended with two male grapplers (one was identified as "Straight Dave" and wore camouflage) tearing each other's clothes off and, while in underwear, kissing down their opponent's chest. This man-on-man action triggered Fort Smith fans to throw chairs and beer at the ring, according to one cop present at the city's Convention Center. [Click here and here to read bulletin board messages posted in early-June by miffed mixed martial arts fans who attended one of Cohen's Arkansas productions.] Cohen is currently filming a follow-up, of sorts, to his smash 2006 film featuring Borat, his fictional Kazakh journalist. The new film stars another of Cohen's creations, Bruno, a gay Austrian journalist who favors mesh t-shirts and interviews subjects about fashion and entertainment. The June 5 Texarkana promotion was adverstised as "Red, White, and Blood." The June 6 matches in Fort Smith were dubbed "Blue Collar Brawlin'" as seen in the below poster. Ads on Craigslist--like this one--noted that attendees had to be over 21 and suggested that fans arrive early "for $1 BEERS!" Cohen & Co. underwrote the cost of beer, which usually sells for $4 at the Fort Smith facility. "Blue Collar Brawlin'" drew about 1500 fans, who were greeted by signs stating that the event was being filmed. Attendees were also not allowed in with cameras or cell phones and some were asked to sign releases. The "Blue Collar Brawlin'" web site (fortsmithfight.com) was registered two weeks before the event in the name of "Peto Philer" of Algeria. The site, which remains live but has been stripped of all content, appears to be currently hosted on servers in Los Angeles.

from the UG:

LMAO @ "Peto Philer"

This movie is going to be hilarious.
