I am in law school right now and have taken a Contracts course, but I still do NOT see how the UFC's contracts are legal. For what it's worth, Trigg made the comment, a few weeks later Tito made the same comment. Whether Tito or Trigg are reliable sources is questionable but both guys saying the same thing adds a little validity.

Here's a question, can the champ just resign the belt, say I don't want to be your champ anymore?

To add - being a champ is like being an executive of a company. Nothing is stopping you from negotiating with competition UNLESS you have a clause in your contract.

This is business, ZUFFA has invested a lot in UFC and they are just trying to protect their investment.

On the other had everyone is jumping on Affliction bandwagon - they are very new org and we have no idea how they will treat their fighters ( and champs ). Let's have a discussion about them a year from now. For the record I love the roster Affliction is putting for PPV and I hope that they will keep doing that.

That is probally spelled in their contract. I haven't seen any personally and this is just my opinion but I think UFC will not allow that ( I think they were burrned by BJ ).

Well, lets see. You are the champ, that means you are the best. But somehow, a new guy comes along makes whole lot more than you do. Would you be able to accept that? Obviously, not that much of an investment if the champ wants to go somewhere else. It would be one thing to get automatic increase on your pay along with automatic 1 year extension, but it is totally different if they force you to stay for another at the same rate when you're clearly the best fighter. Don't say UFC is the best organiation in the world, if they're not willing to put money where their mouth is.

I'm not saying that UFC is best org in the world but this is business. No one made you sign the contract in the first place and obviously you didn't object to the terms since you signed it. So don't whine if someone comes after that and gets better contract. Unlike some other sports where where your value is measured in your contribution to the win in MMA they value you on how many seats you bring ( or PPV buys ). That is a main reason Kimbo and Lesnar are getting paid more than some more experienced fighters. I'm not saying that they will not develope and become good fighters but the fact is that compared to the skill they have they are paid more than they deserve.

Forgot to add - when you got a job at your company where you work you have negotiated terms. Next guys that comes also has to negotiate his terms and company can use your contract as guideline but at the same time they have to take into account market situation ( supply/demand ) as well as negotiating skills of the person. Every company has a goal - to make as much money and one way is to pay employees as little as they can ( without having a riot on their hands )

Well, i guess this becomes an issue now because UFC has competition. Whereas, it was pretty much monopoly before. What you stated are facts, I do not disagree. What I am saying is that it isn't right, and i hope Affliction gains serious momentum so fighters will have choices and UFC will be forced to make some reasonable changes to their contracts.
