I think it would've taken an even longer time for the sport to get estabilished. Some people have said the reason UFC got so big is because Fertitas bought it or the rule changes or even because they were pretty much the first MMA company in U.S. Well all those reasons are absurd in my opinion.
- When Fertitas bought it, things still didn't change, they were still losing money.
- The rule changes were made prior to Fertitas buying it. If you really watch it from the start (UFC 1), then you'll see that for every few UFC's done, new rules were added.
- So what if they were the first company, they were declining year by year with a few spurts here and there like UFC 40 when Shamrock returned.
The reason MMA got so popular is because UFC took advantage of the reality-television revolution by producing TUF. Just like every reality television series, this too had a finale.. except the finale was in a different venue than the whole series. This venue gave the real-UFC feel where they were able to market other fights with the TUF fighters.
The amazing part was how it all worked out. Out of 9 fights, 7 of them ended via first round ko/tko. One of the fights that went to a decision was a fight that is going to remember by all.. a close all out exciting war between Bonnar and Griffin, which had a storybook ending with both fighters getting their deserved contracts. Plus, the ppv after was going to feature the coaches squaring off against each other. Honestly, the whole thing couldn't have worked out better for UFC and in the end for MMA.
