Roger Huerta confirms fight w/Ken-Flo is for title shot
Quote:
Roger Huerta and Kenny Florian will be squaring off at UFC 87. It was expected that the winner of the match-up would receive the next title shot against B.J. Penn. Huerta verified the rumor.
We have been told that the winner of the fight will be the number one contender for the title,” Huerta said.
Should Huerta emerge victorious, he would receive the shot at Penn. Even though Penn would be the prohibitive favorite in the bout, Huerta believes he can take down the champion.
I’m going to do what Matt Hughes did and what Georges St. Pierre did. The guy is beatable. You have to wear him out. You have to go out there and out-will him”
When asked what he thought about Penn calling out St. Pierre instead of addressing the lightweight division, Huerta said the following:
He just hasn’t been challenged yet at lightweight. You can’t underestimate myself or Kenny. We will definitely be up for the challenge of fighting Penn.”
Seeing how Penn looked against Jens Pulver, Joe Stevenson, and Sean Sherk, it’s very hard to see Huerta or Florian defeating Penn. Nevertheless, it appears the UFC is leaning in that direction before the potential superfight with GSP.

By the time this fight happens, it could be for the title itself. I think a BJ Penn moving back to 170 announcement will be made before August.

I think Penn defends the title once, relinquish it then will formally ask to fight GSP. After all the UFC just cleared up the division after so many months I doubt they'd want him to abandon the 155 division so soon after becoming the undisputed champ.
Huerta would get killed.
I think Kenflo would fare better.

I think Kenflo would fare better against BJ Penn style wise. Huerta would make it interesting, I don't think he could beat Penn.
I think Penn will keep the 155 lb belt, then go up to 170 and fight GSP to try and become the first to hold the 155 and 170 at the same time..... I don't think he will be as effective at 170 though... with the added weight, I think we may see the old Penn of gassing after 3, but he will definitely give a lot of the top guys at 170 hell for sure!

Penn has already defended the lw title.
Sherk was a title defense.
He won the belt when he beat Joe.
People can try saying Penn wasn't the champ or stuff like that, but the fact is Penn vs Joe Daddy was for the LW title and Penns fight with Sherk was his first title defense.

I see Penn defending the title against the winner of Huerta/Ken-Flo and then take on GSP. This will give GSP time to defend his title as well.

It was under the banner of interim champ. He beat Joe for the interim title. After Saturday he's the undisputed champ. Yeah it's an annoying technicality but all technicalities are annoying. After he beats either Huerta or Florian he moves up to go after GSP.

I dont remember anything being mentioned about it being an interim belt. The way I remember it, sherk got stripped and BJ and Joe fought for the vacant title, not an interim title. I could however be completely wrong.
