Recently crowed WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner (14-2) will make his first title defense against Marcus Hicks (8-0) at the WEC's Aug. 3 event in Las Vegas.
A source close to Varner today confirmed the rumored bout with MMAjunkie.com.
Formal announcement of that fight, and others, is expected to come during Sunday's "WEC 34: Faber vs. Pulver" event, which airs live from California's ARCO Arena on VERSUS beginning at 9 p.m. ET.

This is an awesome fight. Hicks and Varner both looked unstoppable in their last fights.
Hicks via TKO in the 1st or Varner via late sub.

Varner is a guy that is really really underrated. The guy should be in the UFC and the guy should be considered a top contender in the UFC. Did everyone else forget the beating he was laying on Franca until Franca pulled that knee and armbar out of his ass? If he held on for about 2 more mins, he could have already fought for the UFC title.
I do not know much about Micks, but I think Varner takes this one dominately.

I remember that funky victory dance Varner did in the UFC. WTF was that? HAHAHA!! The Varner v. McCullough fight (I thought) was really good. Hicks has shown some serious talent, so IMO, Varner will have his hands full. I really like this fight.

idk if Varner could submit Hicks, the guy is a very accomplished grappler. but he could out wrestle him and hand him a TKO loss. its a much closer match up then most people think.
i agree this is an awesome fight and to anyone who doesn't think so, F' THEM! Varner and Hicks both destroyed their last opponents in their own worlds, especially Hicks he made Ratcliff look like his bitch lol. cant wait for this one
ill take Varner by TKO late Rd 3 or early Rd 4

I think Varner is gonna tear Hicks up standing Gomez was lighting Hicks up till he got caught in that guillotine.

He is right, Sergio Gomez was laying a pretty good beating on him and then Hicks caught him with a really sweet uppercut if I remember correctly before subbing him. I just looked online for the video but couldn't find it, sorry. It was featured on an episode of TAPOUT a couple years ago.

Yea, Gomez was whooping that ass, be he kept falling into that guillotine over and over and over.
Don't know, though. Wouldn't be surprised if Marcus took this. Especially if he forces it to the ground.

The other title fights likely for this event:
Carlos Condit vs. Hiromitsu Miura
Brian Stann vs. Steve Cantwell 2
