Wth are you goin all crazy over? lol I dont see anything in that interview that was wrong or disrespectful in anymore.. and hes right, he'd tap Hughes out right now.. Hughes is clearly past his day, has admitted hes past his day, and Shields JJ would be too much for him.. now a prime Hughes is a different story.. but not a Matt Hughes who told everyone that he cant train like he use to anymore.

I see what you mean. If I were Shields, I would answer that question differently:
Reporter: So how do you think you'd do against Matt Hughes?
Shields (not): Oh, are you serious? Matt Hughes would rip me apart in seconds. I can't hang with Hughes in any aspect of MMA.
(jackass)
Jake Shields would destroy Matt Hughes right now. (agreeing w/ Afro) Several years ago might be a different story, but if they fought today Shields would dominate.
But seriously, Shields in DREAM? I'd love to see him get another fight in Japan. Could even be on the same card w/ Diaz. Its been planned several times, but a Melendez, Diaz, Shields card would be a DREAM come true.

lol.. i'm not going crazy.. its just.. i don't know man.. you ever just meet someone or hear a celebrity or whatever give an interview and for whatever reason you just dont' like them?
haha i think that's how i feel. i dont' think i really have a reason do dislike him, i just do anyway.... and back to shields and hughes... at ww, only person hughes can't beat is GSP and Penn. There's no reason right now to think Hughes couldn't beat everyone else. he may not be as young as he was, but to say he's now washed up... i think that's crap.. GSP would damn near whoop anyone's ass the same way he did to Hughes.

Jake Shields on GSP - He’s the guy I would most want to fight right now. PDF Print E-mail
Check out what EliteXC fighter Jake Shields has to say regarding his postponed fight with Drew Fickett, his thoughts on how he would match-up against BJ Penn, Georges St. Pierre, and Matt Hughes, his biggest influences in MMA, and much more.
MMAyou.com: How are you doing?
Shields: I’m doing good. Just getting ready for a little training. Helping my guys get ready for their fights.
MMAyou.com: Has the date for your fight with Drew Fickett been rescheduled?
Shields: I think the Drew Fickett fight is rescheduled for sometime in September so its ways off, so there’s the possibility of doing something before. I haven’t talked to Elite team about it so I’m not for sure how they feel but I’ve heard rumors of DREAM wanting me out there so that’s definitely a possibility.
MMAyou.com: If you were to ever fight BJ Penn how do you see that fight going?
Shields: I think that’d be a phenomenal fight. I’d love to fight BJ. I think BJ is a well rounded fighter and he can do whatever. I think I’d just bring a lot of pressure and try to break him. BJ Penn’s weakness has been getting tired so I’d just come at him really really hard, be in great shape, wear him down, and hopefully ground and pound him out.
MMAyou.com: If you were to ever fight Matt Hughes how do you see that fight going?
Shields: I think I’d submit him. I think Matt Hughes is past his day.
MMAyou.com: Is past his day? Is that what you said?
Shields: Yeah, I think I’d tap him out. First round hopefully.
MMAyou.com: Who has better wrestling, you or Matt Hughes?
Shields: Probably better wrestling, probably Matt Hughes. He’s got a little better, we’re close but I think my submissions are just light years ahead of his. If you watch him lately he isn’t what he used to be.
MMAyou.com: Do you want to fight in the UFC one day?
Shields: I’m being treated really good by EliteXC right now so I don’t want to say but I mean it’s definitely a possibility. I’ve been watching the UFC since the first show I’ve watched obviously and it’s a phenomenal show and I’d love to fight their champ right now.
MMAyou.com: Speaking of GSP how do you see that fight going down?
Shields: I think that’d be a phenomenal fight. I think GSP’s awesome. He’s the guy I would most want to fight right now. He’s kind of a complete fighter. To fight him I’d try to almost do the same thing like BJ. If he comes in shape I would just put the pressure on him, get him tired, and see how it goes.
MMAyou.com: Tell us about your “American Jiu Jitsu”.
Shields: Oh it’s just my style of Jiu Jitsu. I kind of mixed the wrestling that I’d done with my black belt in Gracie Jiu Jitsu. I just kind of mixed the styles. Jiu Jitsu is a lot of times really relaxed whereas wrestling is really hard and explosive so I tried to mix the two.
MMAyou.com: Please tell us about your new academy.
Shields: Right now I’m in a small little spot that I’m teaching at but I’m partnered with a guy and we’re looking to open a bigger facility. Academy’s going great right now it’s just our facilities a little too small. We’re going to blow it up. We’ll be the best gym in San Francisco for sure.
I got a lot of good fighters under me so its doing really good.
MMAyou.com: Who are your biggest influences?
Shields: Biggest influences, like in fighting?
MMAyou.com: Life, fighting, whatever you like.
Shields: Biggest influences for fighting I would say Chuck Liddell, David Terrell, and Cesar Gracie. They were just the guys that I looked up to when I got into the sport. They were my motivation to keep training to get better, to get to where I am at today.
MMAyou.com: Is there anything you would like to say to your fans?
Shields: Thanks for all the support and hopefully I will be back strong soon. It’s been frustrating. This year’s been frustrating for me. I had an injury and had to pull out and now Drew Fickett pulled out so it’s been a frustrating start but I’m still training really hard, working on my skills and I plan to do big things this year and next year.

I don't think Sheilds stands a chance against Hughes or GSP. When I watch sheilds I am never impressed with his skill set. He is a above average fighter I just don't think he is elite.

Explain. What's not impressive?
He's probably the 5-6th best wrestler in the weight class.
He's certainly the best BJJ guy in the class
He's submitted Fitch (Gracie Open)
He passes gaurd against very strong guys, making it look easy.
And I'll save you the trouble of bringing up the striking. No he's not a KO artist, but I don't see Hughes, Fitch, Koscheck, Karo, or Deigo KOing people either.
So please explain what isn't impressive? Give us some examples.

I think the concensus is... Non-UFC fighters are unimpressive.
Look at Jake Shields credentials, the guys had hundreds, and hundreds of wrestling matches.. a very good HS wreslting and Juco wrestling background.. adding that to his Black belt in BJJ on top of the many many many grappling tournaments that hes won including tournaments in which hes not only beaten but submitted Diego Sanchez and Jon Fitch.. his striking isnt great but its not a weakness either.. when you talk about grappling, you dont get much better at 170 then Jake Shields. His only unimpressive fight at 170 was the rematch with Kikuchi.. but thats someone he has a win over too.. and theres nothing unimpressive about Kikuchi whos on a very short list of fighters who have both a great wrestling and Judo background.
