IFL to unveil six-sided ring during Aug. 15 show
May 08, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: IFL
thehex.jpgThe International Fight League revealed plans on Thursday to debut a six-sided ring as the fight promotion’s fighting surface. The new ring has been branded as “The Hex” and will debut on August 15 for a show at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J.
The prototype of the new ring is still being constructed. Upon completion, it will be stored in Las Vegas.
While not addressing the issue directly, it’s likely that the IFL’s decision to use a six-sided ring is based on claims by critics that their product looks too much like boxing on television. Publicly, the IFL is indicating that its audience enjoys the ring and that they are going with a six-sided version in order to create a larger fighting environment.
“From a production and live event standpoint, the ring has proven to be the most fan and media friendly environment, as well as providing the safest possible environment for our athletes,” IFL CEO Jay Larkin is quoted as saying in a press release. “The Hex allows for the larger surface that is utilized in other MMA organizations while still retaining the advantages we have enjoyed with the ring.”
No matches for the Aug. 15 card have been announced. The promotion may start revealing matchups to the public in June.

Maybe there still trying to get Angle to fight there, make him feel at home. Wonder if they'll have cage matches soon.

Well, the "unique fighting surface" clearly worked for Yamma.
Other than making it harder for fighters to train for your organization, deviating from the standards of ring or cage is just retarded.
This strikes me as the death-throws of a dying company. Like a restaurant that re-does the layout, and then closes a month later because they don't understand that people want good food, not shiny neon billboards.

Didn't PRIDE use this for that terrible "The Best" show or whatever it was?

Just another gimmick that will fail, it doesn't work in TNA and it wont help the IFL from going into bankruptcy.

There's no difference. No one will care either way, four sides, or six.
They should make it two sides .. AKA close the ring and call it a day, IFL.

Ok...their reasoning for switching is bullshit. Without getting in to any deductive math, for the same area of floor available, a square will always have more surface area than a hexagon.
They should have just come out and said "Well...we don't know what to do, we are bleeding money like a stuck pig, and if this doesn't work, we are adding alligator pits and hanging weapons from the ring ropes. We will call it Beyond Fighterdome!"

It's not TNA's ring to begin with. The six sided ring has been used in mexican lucha libre for over a decade now. TNA simply watched lucha tapes, jacked it,and called it innovative.
And as for IFL,why the fucking gimmicks? Why cant fighters just fight each other for a title?
