UFC News: Matt Serra Wants Fans To Help Get MMA Sanctioned In New York

UFC fighter Matt Serra has released the following:
--
As a native New Yorker, nothing would make me happier than fighting right here in New York.
But I need your help. New York has an antiquated law on its books that prevents any respectable MMA event from being held anywhere in the state. We want that to change, and I’m sure you do too.
These things happen because of pressure from local residents on their legislators, letting the people who pass the bills know that the people they represent care about particular issues.
So we need to get a lot of people to email their legislators. So, please go to Mixed Martial Arts and click on my picture on the left, follow the instructions and send an email or two to your local legislator.
Then forward this email to as many people as you can who you think will also be willing to write and take action.
With your help, we will get MMA to New York. And we will hope to see you at the fights.
Thank you,
Matt Serra

I'll be doing this as soon as I get home today... I don't live in New York anymore but I still have family up there, plenty of places to stay over too if a MMA ticket heads to the garden or coliseum...

I can't believe Matt Serra would say anything about being respectable. If there ever was an ambassador to be fighting for rights in MMA to get it legalized in NY, it ain't him. The foul mouth little man is not who I would want trying to represent me if I was trying to get something legalized.

I live in Pennsylvania and I'm pretty sure you can't have a sanctioned MMA match here. All the PA fighters I know fight in Ohio. I pray for the day the UFC comes to Pittsburgh. Given the blue collar-steel work'n nature of the burgh, I think MMA would be well embraced here.

So the guy is trying to get people in motion for legalization of MMA in NY and you bad mouth him? Yea thats real good! He is a resident of NY, he runs a business in NY, he has spent his whole like in NY. It makes sense that he would want to fight in NY.
Who would be a better representative from NY to do this? Renzo Gracie runs / ran (?) a school there so I can see him being a decent rep, but I believe he lives in Jersey now. So who?
And he said respectable MMA event. You do know he is referring to the UFC, EliteXC, IFL etc... With that right? That they are the respectable MMA events.

And a former champion to boot. I do like Serra... as a coach... and as a representative for the sport. He's an intelligent and funny guy, he just doesn't like Matt Hughes.
Can't fault him for that...

All I can say that Serra vs. Hughes in MSG would be freakin great!!! Serra kinda deserves that for his last fight w/ GSP.

I couldn't agree more.
Props to Serra. I hope he's able to help get this done.
