This treating fighters like shit thing that you bring up. Could it be that the fighters aren't getting paid enough? Cause the only people who seem to bitch about their pay are the guys who are getting paid the most - Couture, Tito, Sylvia, and rumors of AA. Do you hear Leban bitching about his new deal that he gets 25k to show and 25k to win? No. Why? Because outside of base pay, Dana has said publicly and proved with Randy that he does treat his fighters well - IF they perform well. I forget who it was that was interviewed, but they said that Dana treats his fighters very well and stated things such as if he wasn't on a card and wanted to go see it, then the UFC would fly him and a guest out, put them up in a hotel and give them front row tickets. He even said that the tickets alone were worth $1,000 which was awesome for him.
If by treating them like shit you mean not allowing your fighters to fight people outside the UFC then again, I like to bring up if you were under contract to work for Microsoft, you wouldn't be allowed to go work part time at Apple. It just isn't going to happen.
The fighters KNOW what they are getting into when THEY SIGN their contract. The fighters have agents who explain all the terms and conditions of the contract to them. That's what agents do. If anyone could point me to an article where a low level fighter bitches and complains about being mis treated by the UFC, I will gladly eat my words. But in the last 18 months I can't recall a single fighter outside of the better paid guys complaining about how shitty it is working for the UFC.
Dana White love him or hate him has done a tremendous job with building the sport. He still is the best guy for the job as he truly cares about it more than anything else. I really wish there was more of the back story of the UFC in Chuck Liddell's book, but even he states how it is getting better and better. Hell he never complained about his paydays when he wasn't getting the big bucks. He was thrilled just to be fighting.
Its very easy for all of us "fans" to sit back and judge how poorly someone is doing at their job. But like any sport, the UFC is the top dog. College football players dream of making it pro, but sometimes have to go to the CFL or Arena Football first. And like football it seems that only the "top guys" are the ones who complain about their pay and working conditions.
