to me, theres a difference between someone who takes MMA serious, trains and respects the work that people before them have put to get where they are and to get the sport where it is, and someone who says "hey i can do that, i'm a hardass", walk off the street and think they're Fedor. and more and more in todays times, it seems the latter is happening. it reminds me of the first UFCs, people who have no business being in a cage or a ring are in there because they beat up a few sailors. but other than that, i love people watching it. i've gotten 3 of my friends into it, and i feel real proud about it. i like being the one that knows what i'm talking about, and like explaining things they dont understand

I don't think I have ever heard an MMA fan (on the internet or in person) complain about the sport becomming so popular...

This article is bullshit... this isn't a music scene it's a sport.

I’ve watched alot of K-1 (very exciting, but I miss the grappler)
Well that says it all, a true MMA fan finding K-1 very exciting, not interesting or good, but very exciting!!
Watching K-1 is very frustrating as soon as some one gets a good combination on some one they clinch and the ref has to come in and break them up, this can can happen up to 30 times in a fight, thats not exciting at the least.

people who get mad about MMA being mainstream can go ahead and find another sport

i think getting the UFC and MMA altogether in the mainstream media and culture of America is the greatest accomplishment Dana and every MMA promoter on Earth has ever done. they are making our sport more and more popular, so that we can have the air of legitimacy that all the fucking games like golf and tennis, basketball and football, have had for years, that MMA deserves as well.

Exactly, this article talks about these alleged 'original fans' deserting the sport because it went mainstream, what the fuck. This isnt some underground band that sold out to become popular. It's a fucking sport. This writer is completely full of shit.

Has that actually ever been confirmed as Maxp84z?

I know he ran with it as his avatar for the longest time, but I didn't know if that was him. He posted his picture here, but I don't know if it is the same guy.

Also, what do you mean he is in the article?

this article is rediculous.

I didnt start watching mma to get away from mainstream sports. I started watching it because I liked it and I thought it was cool.

I couldnt care less what other people think.

And if the sport is becoming mainstream, well, good for it.

I agree.

I got into MMA years ago because I wrestled and boxed all through school. I always said that a good wrestler would take a good boxer. Then along came MMA.

I think the whole mainstream thing is great for the sport.

Here is why.

Fights between professional fighters from good camps are generally very rewarding, satisfying matches to watch. The more of those fighters there are, the more potentially great matches there will be for us fight fans to see. To me it is very rewarding to see 2 well-versed, multi-talented fighters who are capable of going the distance go at it.

On the other hand there are the guys that are part-time, or just trying to break into the sport. They usually gas early, swing wildly, and if they win, it is largely due to their heart and determination.

MMA going "Mainstream" is necessary for both kinds of fighters.

Without it being mainstream, there would be very little sponsors or money. That would make it very difficult for fighters to devote their lives to training for the fights. When a top-tier fighter's payday was $1k it makes it A LOT tougher of a choice to quit their day job and truly take something seriously. It is the difference between someone who plays football for the NFL and someone who plays down at the park on Sundays.

Also, without the exposure of the sport (from being mainstream) and the allure of landing a big contract and being able to be a professional, I truly doubt that we would be seeing all of these "up and comers" trying to fight their way into the spotlight.

Without the money to offer up for bonuses for KO, submission, or fight of the night, I don't know if we would see these young hungry fighters swinging for the fences, trying to actually finish the fight and earn that $60k bonus, even though they are dead tired, can barely stand, and most likely have to go to work on Monday.

Say what you want, but I think that it is very good for the sport.
