Brock Buster! Mir Article
Brock-Buster! Mir submits Lesnar
By Thomas Gerbasi
For a little over a minute, former
WWE superstar Brock Lesnar looked like he was going to have his way with former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir in his Octagon debut tonight at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. But at this level of the game, it only takes one mistake to end up on the losing end of the equation, and Mir proved it, submitting Lesnar 90 seconds into the opening round.
“No excuses, he’s a top-notch jiu-jitsu guy and he got me tonight. He’s the better fighter,” said Lesnar, a former NCAA wrestling champion who drops to 1-1 in pro mixed martial arts.
Within seconds of the opening bell, Lesnar had dumped Mir on the canvas and started reigning down blows. An inadvertent shot to the back of the head by Lesnar forced a stoppage of the action and a deduction of a point by referee Steve Mazzagatti though, and gave Mir a chance to clear his head.
And while he would be put on the mat a second time, now by a right hand from Lesnar, this time Mir would weather the storm while fighting to sink in an armbar, and as Lesnar looked to finish, Mir grabbed his leg and sunk in the fight-ending kneebar.
“I went for a couple of armbar attempts, but look at the guy’s arms,” said Mir. “His legs were a little leaner, so I attack the neck or the legs on a big guy because they’re always vulnerable.”
It was the Las Vegan’s biggest win since a motorcycle accident sidelined him in 2004.
“I had Brock Lesnar dropping elbows on my head and I still pulled through and grabbed a submission,” said Mir, now 11-3.
As for Lesnar, his 90 seconds of work did show promise, and in turn, he promises to return to the Octagon to chase after the heavyweight crown.
“You win some and you lose some,” said Lesnar. “I’d like to win them all, but you can’t.”

My synapsis: Brock has power and wrestling skills but is still sloppy. He needs to worry less about the crowd and more about the opponent. When he adds patience, precise striking and more BJJ to his arsenal, he will unstoppable.
HOWEVER..
that one inadvertent punch is also what saved Mir. Brock was overpowering him in every way and that one sloppy mistake was enough to save Mir and give him the opportunity he needed. He earned the victory but the only reason he won IMHO was due to that stoppage, which I'm still on the fence about.

Sloppy was the key word Steel. Lesnar has a ton of power -- but need serious refinement in everything.
If he hones his skills, he will be a serious threat.

Yeah I agree that while he did show a couple slip-ups, he also showed ALOT of potential. The dude is amazingly powerful and incredibly athletic. He moved real good I thought. Looking forward to him continuing to better his game and be a major player in the HW division.

What camp does Brock train with? Shit, as long as Brock is determined, focused, and he trains with the best of the best, look out! His strength and power is awesome to watch in a fight. Although he obviously needs a lot of work.
I don't see why Mir got the submission bonus...Brock made a dumbass rookie mistake and Mir caught him. That flipping choke was a lot more interesting from the other fight...

Exactly, The Mir submission was beyond Bogus...Mazzagatti COMPLETELY changed the outcome of the fight with that stoppage.

Well, I don't know about unstoppable, but I agree he needs to add more tools to his game.

I have to respectfully disagree.
Calling it inadvertent is a generous adjective. Brock was out of control, and while he didn't mean to strike the back of the head intentionally, he was frenzied, and had no control or precision in any of his strikes.
I'm absolutely not on the fence about the stoppage: With repeated viewings, I also counted not just the one clear shot, but several grazing shots, of the type that GSP fanboys think were what caused the Serra win.
The bottom line is, a guy with Brock's power, swinging wildly without concern about where his fists land, could very well cripple someone if he lands a shot in the wrong part of the back of the head.
I think Brock shouldn't fight for a year, learn some fundamentals. I've never been a fan of his, and I was psyched as hell that Mir tapped him out, but I don't think he's talented enough to be in the UFC yet, and I think he's potentially dangerous in a bad way.

Again, I have to resectfully disagree. I think you guys are wrong about the break, it was more than justified. Lesnar had no clue what he was doing, he was flailing around like it was his first day.

Justified on what? for a point deduction againts Lesnar? it should be only a warning if you ask me...like i was said on the other thread, Lesnar did not even intentionally hit Mir in the back of the head…. he TURNED away...ive seen way worse than that and no point deduction.
I was rooting for Mir againts Lesnar, but Steve Sucks!

I agree with RH. Steve called to watch the shots but he was going nuts. He has to have some self control. He know the rules. You follow them or you get docked. Good call for steve!
