Former PFC Chambion Shawn Bias in A Coma
Quote:
ormer Palace Fighting Championship featherweight titleholder Shawn Bias (Pictures) has been given a 30-percent chance of surviving by doctors at Oroville General Hospital in Bias' hometown about 70 miles north of Sacramento, Calif.
The 22-year-old fighter suffered an apparent heart attack late Saturday night -- just two days after losing his PFC title to Art Arciniega (Pictures) -- and later lapsed into a coma around 1 a.m. Sunday morning. After being admitted to the hospital, Bias was also diagnosed with complete kidney failure and has since been placed on dialysis.
George Adkins (Pictures), a training partner and close friend of Bias, informed Sherdog.com of the situation, noting that Bias did not take very much damage in an unregulated fight Thursday night at the Tachi Palace in Lemoore, Calif.
Adkins also acknowledged that Bias, whom doctors diagnosed as having strep throat on Monday, refused to pull out of the scheduled bout despite suffering from pneumonia and an infected tooth.
"It is all speculation at this point," said a solemn Adkins, "but Shawn's family and friends just want the people in the MMA community to know what is going on and to ask for their prayers."
Adkins also stated that due to Bias' critical state, the fighter has not been moved to a more advanced medical facility in Chico, Calif.
"At this point it is in Shawn and God's hands," Adkins said.

Here we go again. After Sean Salmon's ceisure last year and Sam Vasquez's death, this couldn't come at a worst time for the sport.
Bias is a good fighter and I can only hope he pulls through this, although if he does I doubt well see him in action again, but thats not even what's important. Let's all jsut hope he'll cme out of this

not sure what exactly makes you think this has any impact on the sport since it didn't even happen at a fight and at this point hasn't been blamed on fighting.

I know it didn't but it's a fighter either way. Plus a lot of people will find a way to spin this against the sport.

You worry too much. Its a medical condition more than an injury, and its a fighter participating in an unsanctioned event which minimizes its impact upon the legitimate (sanctioned) sport of MMA even more.
With that being said I hope he recovers .... its always a tragedy to see a young life extinguished.

Shawn bias in coma
http://fiveouncesofpain.com/2008/01/...ias-in-a-coma/
"Palace Fighting Champisonship’s former featherweight title holder, Shawn Bias, is in a coma and has been given a 30% chance to live according to a report from Sherdog:
The 22-year-old fighter suffered an apparent heart attack late Saturday night — just two days after losing his PFC title to Art Arciniega (Pictures) — and later lapsed into a coma around 1 a.m.
Speaking for the staff of 5 Oz., our thoughts are with the friends and family of Bias. More on this story as more details surface"
sad to hear that about any fighter...

this will have no impact on mma whatsoever as i see it. the guy had health problems, he took little damage in the fight, and it didnt even happen during or immediatly after the fight. also the fight was unsanctioned.

Hoping the guy recovers and gets healthy is first. Worrying about it affecting the stigma of MMA in the mainstream is a very distant 2nd at this point in time.
