Jake shields has not even reached that and he may never by not signing with the ufc. He will just rack wins against irrelevant fighters i

Do you honestly think that the suits at UFC would have put Shields, a guy in what Dana calls "a rejects league", top tier comp? They would have thrown Tan, Lytle, Fioravanti, and Swick at him. He wouldn't have even sniffed top comp. The last time they offered Shields a deal, it was as a last minute replacement for an undercard fight when he was already considered a top 10 fighter. Staying in EXC will actually allow Shields to fight better comp than the UFC would have thrown at him.
Just to add to the point. With all the hype that the UFC has put behind Kos, Sanchez, GSP, Serra, Fitch (not so much), and Karo. Not including the TUF 6 guys there is no room in the WW division for Shields to get the same exposure fighting in EXC will give him. So IMO the whole "better comp" aguement is void.

Shields would get way more exposure to the fans by fighting on a opening bout for UFC then he would main eventing EXC.How many casual fans actually watch EXC?If Shields is as great as you say he is then he should have no problem working his way to the top of the UFC.Im a Shields fan but i really dont see him beating the top WW in UFC.Plus wtf does Jake Shields have to do with this thread anyway?

Concurred...
Honestly I find it amusing every time there's discussion of a popular fighter that people get accused of "nuthugging" but those same people who accuse are doing the exact same thing...
Now it's pointless to sit here and say that grappling isn't mma, it's obvious, grappling is an aspect of mma... it's also pointless to say Shields is unproven, we know styles and match-ups make fights... you can beat the best and still lose to the not-so-best (Diaz v Gomi v Noons anyone?).
That being said I've seen some, not all, of Sheilds bouts and it's my opinion that...
1. He's not near GSP's skill in MMA.
2. You're daft if you'd think GSP would duck anyone.

even if ur scenario happened where he got put on preliminary cards, more ppl would probably be watching those on demand than watching exc live. Elite xc gets shit buyrates... he probably would've better off fighting lytle and swick than the future cans they're going to bring.
By the way i'm not talking about mike kyle being a can. He's a good fighter but they're going to run out of quality ww's to bring in the future
