You will never hear Matt Serra say he knocked GSP out because he fought BJ Penn.
In this case it does when nearly every top 5 WW is in the UFC it does matter. GSP was fighting Matt Hughes Koshcheck and Serra this years and Sheilds has fought Sharuto ,Pyle ,Parienete and Stienbiess theres a big diffrence in comp there. until They fight its all gonna be pure speculation anyway you have your opionion and i have mine and I guess we will just leave it at that

yeah... where I have heard this... "better wrestler than gsp" argument before... let me think...

bah... it's escaping me at the moment...

Shields would get beat on the ground or standing. To ignore the extenuating circumstances surrounding GSP vs Serra now is just foolish...

If you're a fan of Shields... hey more power to you, let him come out of strikeforce and find his way to the UFC and let's see how he does eh?... But after seeing his last fight there's nothing about him to lead me to believe he has a chance in hell at being St. Pierre....

Jake has great skills and a pretty solid MMA record. But until he gets in with the top 5 fighters I have to give him a question mark in terms of where he would rank. Sadly he won't fight anyone in EliteXC to change that.

I believe this is the article that GSP wanted to clear up:

ST-PIERRE LOOKING SHARP IN TRAINING (mmaweekly)

MMAWeekly.com was on location to observe a traditional Friday sparring session at the Tri-Star gym in Montreal, Canada. On hand were Georges St-Pierre, Rashad Evans, Denis Kang, Patrick Cote, Jonathan Goulet, David Loiseau, David Pariseau, Jacob MacDonald, Steve Claveau and more.

Coaches Greg Jackson and Mike Van Arsdale were also there to supervise the proceedings. From an on-lookers vantage point, it seemed clear that Jackson is St-Pierre’s closest advisor these days.

The initial pairings as directed by Coach Jackson included Evans versus St-Pierre and Loiseau versus Kang. The fighters began by working mainly their striking and occasionally shooting in for a takedown attempt. Every five minutes they would take a short rest and find a new partner for the next round.

Of note, not one fighter (including Evans) was able to take down St-Pierre and it definitely wasn’t because of a lack of effort. On the other hand, it looked as though St-Pierre took everyone down almost at will with probably a 95% success ratio.

St-Pierre’s standup also looked crisp. Although he doesn't throw a lot of combinations, the strikes he does throw land clean and often. Perhaps one minor note of criticism is that his feet are not always grounded thus reducing the amount of weight behind his strikes.

There was also some speculation around the gym, although St-Pierre did not confirm this, that he had actually been anticipating the possibility of Serra pulling out of the fight and thus had been going through his regular intensive training rituals for 12 weeks leading up to the fight. This is interesting because his Dec. 29 opponent, Matt Hughes has repeatedly stated that one of the factors he chose to take the fight was that because he felt St-Pierre may not have had sufficient time to prepare. If what St-Pierre’s teammates are saying is true, Hughes may be in for a bit of a surprise.

i give credit to gsp for coming out, saying the truth and correcting what was said about his teammates ability to take him down.

He said it himself that he doesn't consider himself the champ until he beats serra. I don’t know how you could even consider saying that he wants no part of shields. GSP is going to constantly be fighting the top ww’s unlike Shields. Shields has to come over to the ufc or his ranking will plateau because he’s unable to fight the higher ranked ww’s

i agree with this, although i think that its much more than an edge in striking, but definitely an edge in wrestling... shields is a much bjj practioner though.

Yea you won’t hear matt serra say that. U will hear him say "I knocked out GSP, the #1 ww fighter". Who you fight does matter… you think if I went 30-0 against pure cans, I can call myself the best in the world? You have to fight the best to consider yourself the best. You make it seem like its so irrelevant (“doesn’t mean jack shit”?). The reason we are able to compare fighters in other organizations is not cuz of their skill level, its by who they beat. I agree they are able to beat other top fighters cuz of their skill though. but look at when we had to compare shogun and chuck, we ranked shogun usually higher because of the competition he beat compared to liddell.

he didnt get guillotined... fitch was in that guillotine a long time and he still got out.. but he did get choked out via the rnc. However, the point is obviously it might change in the world of mma, when u add in striking, things change... Grappling does not equal mma.
Hell if gsp was in the gracie open, i think eventually shields would get him in a sub, but in mma, i definitely give the advantage to gsp. Add more facets, the game changes!

I think if shields and gsp fought, the winner would be the person who would be able to dictate where the fight goes and i think gsp would be able to do that better than shields.

Hell even though i like shields way more than fitch... fitch has a better shot in beating gsp... they both are very equally matched and fitch could easily dictate where the fight goes too.

p.s - triangle choke, it was in gracie open 2005

But what did GSP say to Matt after the fight? The thing that Matt said, "We will talk about that later."
