No, he did not get stomped. The amount of debate on the issue that still remains unabated suggests that, by definition, it was a controversy.
Also, there seemed to be approximately equal numbers of fans that thought:
Diego won 1, 2, & 3
Diego won 1 & 3
Diego won 2 & 3
Diego won only 3
some people scored round 1 a draw, some round 2 a draw, and some scored round 3 a 10-8 round.
Nobody came up with a good reason (ie one absent of obvious logical flaws) for Diego winning either round 1 or 2, and since nobody who felt Diego won could even agree which rounds he won, I'd say the lopsided UD was very controversial indeed. A draw or Karo victory was the logically superior decision.

It should maybe have been a split, but if Diego controlled the action just as much as Karo did.
I don't think any of the judges scored the 3rd round 10-8, which it really should have been anyway.

Watching it live the Sylvia/Mir fight was contoversional.After watching the replay you understood why it was stopped ,but watching it live is different.

definitely, i remember flippin out when dean jumped in but damn did he catch that good. another controversial decision would be newton/hughes I. hughes was out before newton got slammed, but teh ref didn't catch it.
