Exactly, I watched one of my favorite fighters (Guida) lose, and then I watched my absolute favorite boxer get KO'd. Great night to be a fan of both lol.

Well, these MMA fighters have been known to get into a lot of trouble.

Over the years, they've bitten people's ears off in the ring, been busted for drug possession and steroid distribution scandals, homicide investigations and illegal gambling and betting.

Shame on these MMA fighters, how dare they.

*end sarcasm*

Apparently, everyone is missing the point.

The point is that here is a long time boxing fan that absolutely does not like MMA and tells you that point blank. He then goes on to explain that even though this guy died, there should not be (and hasn't been) any outrage or calls for banning.

He even details that you should just make the sport as safe as possible. He also comments that other sports have deaths and serious injuries. He even has a great idea that wouldn't impact the sport and keep people like Sammy Vasquez out of the cage: More pre-fight health testing. As g'nightXX said ealier, Vasquez was just not in the right shape to start a intense sport like cage fighting.

I wish you guys would have read the article instead of just jumping to a knee jerk reaction from the first paragraph. There will always be critics out there, but having a critic with a well reasoned response and reasonable suggestions that do not affect the fight itself is a step in the right direction.

I know what he said, and I am saying that he should stfu when it comes to saying MMA needs to be safer.

It doesn't take a genius to see that he is biased.

"You don't have to like or understand the sport to accept that in many ways it is no more dangerous than many of the sports we love. Or at least there hasn't been much evidence presented that says otherwise."

there is the rational thought the poster was referring to. that may be it though.

...and thanks for the Hatton/Mayweather spoiler folks.

Please learn English. The words rational and rationale have different meanings.

This is my first post, but I love reading everyones' thoughts on this board and I want to contribute.

First off, I am a fan of MMA and boxing, but more so MMA. That being said, I can completely understand if someone doesn't like or watch MMA due to it's violent content. It has been times that I've watched a guy get pummeled to the point that I'm happy the ref stepped in and wondered why he took so long and I'm sure I'm not the only fan to feel that way.

But, for anyone to act as if boxing isn't just as violent and also won't make a fan hope the ref jumps in to stop a pummeling is ridiculous. I hate the fact that the first death in MMA has happened not only because a man died but because people use this to further the crusade to end MMA. No one steps back to look at the sport and see that it went from guys coming to the ring with a boxing glove on one hand and a taped other hand or legal low blows and became a legit commissioned contact sport that deserves the same respect as boxing.

I understand those who make money off of boxing such as promoters or fighters trying to sway viewers and supporters away from MMA because it is competition, but this "Human Cock/Dog fighting mindset with MMA and not boxing has to stop.

The guy in the article wanted to talk about safety. And he applauds boxing for their safety?

Several years ago, Chuck did some interview on Best Damn Sports Show(some of you remember it). In that interview he talks about a pro boxer gets punched in the head 25-75 times in a round. 200 - 500 times in a fight. Then he said that he may have taken 50 good punches to the head in his career.

Even with Vasquea's unfortunate death, it still doesn't change the fact that boxing is far more dangerous and has longer lasting health effects than MMA. How many long time boxers are now half retarded because of the continous blows? How many times have you ssen a fighter out on his feet, get up and the fight is continued, only to see him eat 5-15 huge shots afterward?

And after all is said and done, if a fighter walks into a ring/cage and doesn't realize that he "might" get hurt in this sport, that guy has no business in the sport in the first place. Vasquez, and all the other combat fighters (boxers, MMA, dart players, doesn't matter) made a decision to follow his dream and enter the sport. He made the choice, he followed his dream, his wife supported that dream. Sometimes dreams become nightmares.

That writer is a douche and it has nothing to do with Boxing v MMA, but it has to do with "he just doesn't understand" why a man would want to follow a dangerous dream.

I'm sick of the whole "sweet scientific beauty of boxing" vs the "barbaric bar brawler that is MMA" ordeal. Almost every anti-MMA gives props to boxing (except a few who hate both) while completely trashing MMA as some new suburban outing. Just admit you're a boxing mark and you think MMA sucks!

It's bizarre how every anti-MMA article basically says the same thing over and over...and over and over and over again. The only ones I've seen with constructive criticism on boxing vs MMA or why MMA isn't all that great is on MMA forums! And every journalist who writes this crap only knows of UFC, which is a shame.
