UFC: Sherk To Keep Title
Quote:
Sean Sherk will keep his title after all. According to Steve Sievert of Brawl Sports, the UFC has confirmed that Sherk will remain their lightweight champion.
UFC president Dana White has gone back and forth on whether he would strip Sherk of his title were he to lose his appeal to the NSAC. First, White told Yahoo!Sports' Kevin Iole that Sherk would keep the title regardless of the outcome of his appeal, then a few days later, White backpedelled on those comments stating during a conference call that Sherk would probably be stripped of his title if he were to lose his appeal.
In any case, it would appear that the UFC has decided against removing Sherk's title, rendering the need for an interim title holder obsolete.
The UFC has yet to comment about the interim lightweight championship tag it has placed on the highly anticipated match-up between BJ Penn and Joe Stevenson set to take place later next month.

It seems Dana is not a man of his words.
Edit: Can a mod please change the title to "sherk to keep title"
PS: do not write and talk on the phone.

Dana didn't say what would happen if Sherk's sentence was reduced. He didn't win his appeal, but he didn't lose it necessarily either.

I wonder what this means for Penn/Stevenson. I guess it will no longer be a 5 round fight?
That's kind of disappointing.

Who knows. This would be the second time that the UFC has changed their minds. What's to say it doesn't happen a third time?
Two weeks from now we may hear something entirely different.

I see both sides of this. First, reduced suspension or not Sherk was not cleared of doping allegations, and I don't think he should keep the belt.
On the other hand, from a buisness/PR standpoint, most people probably don't know about the whole mess, and if the let him keep the title and don't mention it on broadcasts it wil stay that way.
Just checked UFC.com, I didn't see anything about any sort of title on the line for BJ/Joe. Probably going to be a #1 contender deal

It's still going to be for the Interim belt I think. They haven't come out and said that it isn't yet.

Why did I see this happening... Oh well, like you said Noob, they might change it if they see an aggressive enough reaction. Still... I have to, once again, point out the fact that Franca is still out.

Very stupid of Dana.
Thank god MMA isn't quite as mainstream as other big sports right now, b/c if it was, there would already be articles up stating "UFC stands by steroids user". etc.
