MMA officially legalized in North Carolina
By MMAFighting.com on August 31, 2007

Mixed martial arts was officially legalized in North Carolina yesterday when Governor Michael Easley signed a bill authorizing the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety's Alcohol Law Enforcement Division to define and regulate the sport.

Before MMA events can begin taking place in the state, the Division must form or adopt rules and regulations for the sport.

To compensate the Division for its additional responsibilities, the bill will allow the Division to collect $1.50 out of every ticket sold as well as increase all licensing fees.

Not a huge deal I guess, just came across this thought I'd share......I guess it adds another future site to the UFC down the road.

I think it is a big deal, not that I care about each and every state, but it means more talent and more competition. Not only that but it appears to be getting more accepted as a legitimate sport. All that equaling more fans and more money for the UFC, which in turn will create better fighters cause they in turn would get paid bigger purses IMO

Anyone know how many states are left? or cause I really don't know, how many are already legalized if the list is shorter

I don't think UFC is going to run any events in North Carolina, or at least not for a while. But its still a good thing to give more younger fighters get an opportunity to fight.

Missouri I believe is in the process of getting it legalized, shouldn't be too much longer. They allow amateur MMA in Missouri right now but not pro yet.

Why wouldn't they? According to TV ratings the Raleigh-Durham area and Charlotte Metro are in the top 15 in Neilsons for MMA television programming.
Besides the UFC has roots in Charlotte. UFC 3 and UFC 5 were both held here.

I geeked about it. Hell I'd hope for any sort of small promotion to hold events around NC. There are several MMA schools in the Charlotte area. My school has 5 or 6 guys that have had pro fights. There are 4 Gracie schools in NC. I'm sure they have a solid camp of young fighters too.
