Alberto Gonzalez here to stay
A little more than two-and-a-half years ago, Alberto Gonzalez Crane stepped out of mixed martial arts competition for what he believed to be the last time.
At that point, only the upper echelon of the fight world was able to make a living off of the sport. So the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt focused his efforts on building his martial arts schools and training other fighters.
Now, with the explosion of the sport not only in the United States, but across the globe, and with a wife and brand new baby boy, Crane has come to realize a forgotten dream. On Saturday night in Las Vegas, he will step into the famed Octagon, not as a hopeful, but as a full-time, professional mixed martial artist.
When he got the call from the UFC, Crane made the determination that it was now or never. So he sold his schools in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico, packed his bags and moved to Los Angeles to get serious about his training.
UFC 74 will be Crane’s first bout for the promotion and he faces a tough task in Roger Huerta, but he also brings with him a stellar record of 8-0 in professional MMA. Not to mention a wealth of world-class grappling experience and the experience of being in an epic fight with Javier Vazquez in his early days.
Not many of the new era of MMA fans know a lot about Alberto Gonzalez Crane. “He’s the big name and I’m nobody,” said Crane. But he believes that he brings skill and experience to the Octagon that Huerta has never faced before.
“He makes mistakes with other guys and he’s gotten away with, but not with me. He’s never faced anybody like me before.”
Alberto Gonzalez Crane faces Roger Huerta Saturday night at UFC 74 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
