Sean Salmon (11-3 MMA, 0-2 UFC) will replace Chris Price (11-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC) and take on former UFC fighter Travis Wiuff (44-11 MMA, 0-2 UFC) for the International Fighting Organization’s light-heavyweight title on Saturday, Sept. 1.
Salmon today confirmed the news with UFCjunkie.com (
www.ufcjunkie.com).
The “Fireworks in the Cage II” IFO event, which is organized by Steele Cage Promotions, takes place at the Riveria Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The organization was co-launched by Hall of Fame boxing referee Richard Steele and attorney Steve Oshins earlier this year. The IFO recently scored a television deal with HDNet.
Wiuff, one of MMA’s most experienced fighters, was expected to face Price, an Indiana-based fighter who rose to prominence in the Indianapolis-based Legends of Fighting organization. After signing with the UFC, though, he suffered losses to Kendall Grove and Ed Herman.
The reason for his withdrawal from the IFO event is not known.
Salmon, who requested a temporary leave from the UFC following losses to Rashad Evans and Alan Belcher, has since posted two victories in smaller organizations. The former Ohio State University wrestler plans to drop from 205 to 185 pounds but chose to remain at light heavyweight for next week’s championship fight.
Other former UFC fighters scheduled for the event are Tony Fryklund (14-9 MMA, 2-2 UFC) and Justin Levens (9-6 MMA, 0-2 UFC).
