NIKKAN SPORTS: PRIDE REBIRTH SET FOR AUG. 18

Saitama Super Arena reserved, Japanese newspaper reports

By Gino Mongelli

TOKYO – Nikkan Sports is reporting the first PRIDE event under Zuffa LLC management will take place Saturday, Aug. 18 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. According to the report, PRIDE representatives reserved the arena June 19. Judo and MMA star Hidehiko Yoshida is expected to participate in the event, the report indicated.

The first PRIDE event under Zuffa control was originally scheduled for July 16 at the Rainbow Hall in Nagoya, Japan. However, Zuffa LLC head Lorenzo Fertitta indicated his desire to hold the event closer to Tokyo. “I would really like to hold our first event in the Tokyo area,” Fertitta said. The July 16 reservation at Rainbow Hall was cancelled soon after.

The Aug. 18 event will be held at PRIDE’s old home, 25 miles from Tokyo. According to the report, many of the top PRIDE fighters remain under contract. Their participation is being sought.

Representatives from Zuffa LLC have not verified the report.

I can't see any reason why UFC would desolve Pride, I really hope this is true.

I don't think it would really make sence to dissolve pride. Pride is a big name in Japan. The name will sell the tickets, more so than the UFC name will IMO. It would be smart (I think) to have to contracts written so the fighters can fight in both organizations. So the names of the fighters start to sell the fights as much as the organizations name. Think about it, how many people here buy a PPV just becasue it is put together by UFC regardless of who is on the card? Dont get me wrong, a strong card will make more people buy it though.

Good job Zuffa, they've owned the company for less than a month and they already have a show in the works. I'm impressed

Who knows? I am just happy to hear that Zuffa is planning a Pride show.
