Vazquez/Marquez III...in case you forgot.
I shoulda made this thread much earlier this week and I feel awful about it. On a night when the rest of you guys who are also boxing fans were understandibly watching UFC 82 tonight, I purposely missed the first half of the PPV in order to watch the rubber match between Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez in a fight that's following two incredible fights.
First off, I'm a bigger boxing fan than I am an MMA fan, and I love MMA. Second off, I watched the first two fights they had and I felt obliged to watch the third somehow.
Boys, boxing was the winner tonight, if you guys follow that sort of thing, the whole boxing vs. MMA thing. Nothing that the UFC event tonight provided (and it was excellent, I'll tell you), compares to the beautiful savagery I witnessed watching Vazquez/Marquez III. It was the greatest rubber match to cap off the greatest trilogy I've ever seen in all 23 years of my life. Greater than Bowe/Holyfield, greater than Gatti/Ward, greater than Pacquiao/Morales, and even greater than Barrera/Morales (mind you, I'm only talking about the great trilogies of my lifetime).
This fight had it all. Two-way action. Drama. Cojones the size of the country both men come from. Just a touch of controversy. All in all, it was an epic, epic fight that can challenge Corrales/Castillo I as the Fight of the Decade and one that I'll probably watch over and over again, just to try and soak in some of the greatness the fight gives off.
I strongly urge you guys to scope out all 3 of their fights. If you like boxing in the least, it's mandatory. Even any of you diehard MMA extremists who claim boxing is dead would learn to love the sport once again watching it. It really was that kind of fight. And I felt priveleged and fortunate to have been able to watch it.
