GSP fights every 3.5-4 months. Two of those weeks going to taking time off after a fight and 2 months goes to training specifically for a fight. So, that leaves him with a month to a month and a half to improve on certain aspects of his game. I think that's not enough time to improve on a specific component in a specific discipline which might be the reason why he doesn't have the greatest guard.
I know that he loses the size advantage if he moves up to MW but MW has worse wrestlers than WW. I personally can't think of anyone besides Hendo and Okami who could put GSP on his back. Well Maia has yet to face a top wrestler but he will definitely pull guard.
GSP's ability to pass the guard has been pretty good even prior to going to Brazil but I thought he mainly went to learn how to sweep his opponents but that's pure speculation from my part.
