You know what I was thinking about when looking at that picture... how Herb dean is so inconspicuous... I think a ref can still get a great view but doesnt have to be so close to the fighters. That's what actually bothered me about Big John. He was way too close to the action and honestly talks a little too much during the fight. "Come on you got get out of that position", "come on you got to work", "thats it keep on fighting". Honestly that can get very distracting for the fighters

He only needs to start saying something when there are illegal blows or when a fighter doesnt seem to intelligently defend themselves. Fighters want to be able to hear their corners too and you don't need to give cues to fighters that they are in a dominant position. For instance Hughes mentioned that even though he had Royce's back at ufc60, he didn't think about finishing the fight. Hughes was trying to get the choke and land single blows but it was only when Big John said, "come on royce, you gotta work, let's go", thats when he really noticed he can finish the fight.
