Couple of things -
1. Hughes is still a Top 5 WW and arugably number 2 right now at WW. Fitch may be on a great streak right now, but he has only beaten one or two top ten guys in his career. Hughes has made his career by beating Top Ten guys, so therefore IMO he is number 2 right behind GSP.
2. Hughes is not only the greatest WW of All-Time, but one of the best MMA fighters of all time. The guy gets no love because of his attitude, but its hard to deny the fact that he has accomplished more in his career then most other fighters. No one has had more title defenses and as dominate riegns as Hughes. Out of all his title defenses, he only went the distance once and finished off the other 6 oppenants. Out of those 6 he finished off he finished off 3 of them in the first round. He has actually finished Trigg (2x), Royce Gracie, GSP, Castillo and Riggs all in the first round.
3. He has beaten the last two guys to beat him. I know GSP might now have been all mentally there the first time, but ummmmm, mental strength is a huge part of the game so that win was not a fluke. Now when it comes to Penn, yes Penn got hurt and it was a wierd injury that occured because Hughes was hurting Penn and he needed to try something desperate to get out of the situation. Penn even said it himself that he was getting hurt by Hughes with the elbows and decided he needed to try something because if he stayed down there any longer, who knows what could have happened. Also, who says Penn would have won that fight if he wasn't injuried. You guys all assume way way too much. What if Hughes put it into the 4th round and Penn was gassed, who says the same thing couldn't have happened? Who says the same thing couldn't have happened in the 5th round if it got that far, or if Hughes came back and won the next 3 rounds and took home a decision. People just assume because Penn won the first two rounds, they he would keep on dominating Hughes if it wasn't for the injury, but in all honestly we all have no idea what would have happened. What did happen is Hughes won, so move on and deal with it.
4. Hughes is going to set Alves back a few pegs. Alves is making his career out of beating Karo it seems and now people just expect him to beat up on Hughes. Guys Hughes is way better then Karo and Alves is going to find that out the hardway. I taking Hughes in the first via Kimura.
