EliteXC Books Kimbo Slice vs. Tank Abbott for Feb. 16 Show
Quote:
A fight between Internet-brawler-turned-MMA-fighter Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson (1-0) and early UFC fighter David “Tank” Abbott (9-13) will take place after all.
The fight, which was originally booked for October but canceled when event organizers shut down the show, has been picked up by Pro Elite, Inc., which will feature the heavyweight bout as part of its Feb. 16 EliteXC show.
The news comes from ProElite.com blogger Sam Caplan.
The fight, which has been booked for the night’s main event, airs live as part of a Showtime broadcast that kicks off at 10 p.m. ET. The show is expected to take place in Miami, Fla. — possibly at the University of Miami Arena.
Abbott and Slice were originally booked to fight Oct. 12 at a Cage Fury Fighting Championships event. Organizers of the show vehemently denied the numerous rumors of the event’s cancellation — only to officially scratch the event days later.
Many other regional organizations jockeyed for the fight, but Slice instead signed a long-term deal with EliteXC. The 33-year-old fighter made his debut with the organization — and his official professional MMA debut — with a 19-second submission (via punches) of Bo Cantrell in November.
Abbott, one of the sport’s pioneers, began fighting professionally in 1995. The 42-year-old fighter appeared in UFC events from UFC 6 to UFC 45 while making stops in PRIDE, Rumble on the Rock and other organizations. The fan favorite has had little success as of late, though, going 1-7 in his past eight fights and 3-10 in his past 13 fights.
The latest EliteXC card includes:
- Tank Abbott vs. Kimbo Slive
- Kyle Noke vs. Scott Smith
- Antonio Silva vs. TBA
- James Thompson vs. TBA
The organization will also host a Jan. 25 “ShoXC” event in Atlantic City, N.J..
