Gomez is a very good fighter, he's got good fundamentals and a ton of heart, but considering how stacked the welterweight division is, I dunno if he can find a whole lot of success there. And for the moment, the proposed Gomez/Chavez Jr. fight is off, because Arum sees how much Chavez can bring in fighting on PPVs, and thus doesn't want to risk all that against someone as dangerous as Gomez is.

The only knock on Gomez is that he doesn't have the sort of power needed to truly break into 147 as a real viable threat to the likes of Mayweather, Cotto, Margarito, Mosley, Cintron, Williams, and Judah. If he was capable of doing so, he'd probably be better served getting down to 140, where he'd be a favorite against anyone other than Hatton. Unfortunately, I think 147 is as low as he can go and is also where he can make the most money for the time being the division's gatekeeper. There's still mid-level fights he can take though to become a viable contender, against guys like Collazo, Clottey, Cosme Rivera, David Estrada, those kinds of guys. Beat them, and he can start thinking about a title shot. Gomez/Cintron would be a good little fight, and probably represents Gomez's best shot at winning a title at the moment, because he won't beat Mayweather, Cotto, or Williams.
