It's my personal preference that I don't want to have to worry about becoming dependent on sleeve, and pant leg grips in the event that I get into a self-defense situation with someone who isn't wearing a durable long-sleeve shirt or pair of pants.


But it's a relatively small point, and it's just my personal preference. You are not going to be severely handicapped by either style, especially if you just want it for real-world application.


The truth is that both styles are beneficial, and force you to think about the game in different ways. Gi helped me think about the fundamentals more, posture, control, breaking balance. No-gi helped me to think about the anatomy, how certain grips work, which parts of the body are stronger and easier/harder to influence.


You can't go wrong with either one. Most schools teach both anyway, and I would recommend a little of both. If you can only take one style, just pick based on preference. Some people say it's harder to start gi after doing no-gi for a long time, others say it's the other way around. The truth is that it's different for everyone.
