Clint made great points and you would be wise to take a look at all of them, but if the running is still too much for you, try and eliptical machine, those tend to be easier on the body.
Also, Swimming is a big thing that is over looked by alot of people today, it can be a great work out using the entire body, and is no contact what so ever.
Another good thing is to keep positive, don't starve of all of lifes luxurys and don't try to do all this at once, remember it took a while for your body to get the way it is, and it will take a while to get back in shape, but you can do it. You can do it all night long.
